High school boys basketball: Sioux Valley wins BEC tournament as Flandreau earns second

The Sioux Valley Cossacks won the Big East Conference Tournament title by defeating Chester 66-52 on Friday and defeating the Flandreau Fliers 57-38 on Saturday night.

The Fliers finished in second place in the tournament, defeating Baltic 58-51 in the semifinals on Friday night.

The Cossacks improved to 8-0 on the season and will travel to Hamlin on Tuesday night.

Flandreau is now 5-3 and will travel to Madison on Thursday night.

Friday

Sioux Valley 66, Chester 52

GARRETSON The Cossacks advanced to Saturdays championship game with a win over the Flyers on Friday night.

Sioux Valley took a 20-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and used a 14-11 advantage in the second quarter to take a 34-20 lead into halftime. Chester out-scored the Cossacks 19-18 in the third quarter but trailed 52-38 entering the fourth quarter. The Cossacks out-scored the Fliers 14-13 in the final quarter to secure the win.

Alec Squires and Maverick Nelson each had a game-high 21 points for the Cossacks with Squires adding 12 rebounds, four assists and four blocks and Nelson adding three steals and an assist.

Maxwell Engebretson also scored 15 points with four assists, two steals and two rebounds for Sioux Valley.

Jovi Wolf scored 23 points with three assists, three rebounds and a steal for Chester. Layke Wold had eight points with four rebounds, three assists and a steal and Brayden Schut had seven points with five rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Sioux Valley shot 52 percent from the floor including 7-for-17 (41.2%) on 3-pointers. The Cossacks also made 9-of-10 free throws (90%) and committed 11 turnovers.

Chester shot 32 percent from the floor including 11-for-32 (34.4%) on 3-pointers. The Flyers made 7-of-9 (77.8%) free throws, committed 16 turnovers and outrebounded the Cossacks 25-23.

Flandreau 58, Baltic 51

FLANDREAUThe Fliers built a lead in the first half and pulled away in the second half to defeat the Bulldogs in the BEC semifinals on Friday night.

Flandreau led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter and expanded its led to 25-20 at halftime. The Fliers extended their lead to 40-32 at the end of the third quarter and held on despite Baltics 19-18 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Paul Parsley held the Fliers with 18 points while Alfie Henderson had 14 points. Luke Sheppard also scored in double figures with 10 points while Xavier Bien had nine points, Micah Otta had five points and Kody Kneebone had two points.

Jack Erickson led Baltic with 19 points while Ben Erickson had nine points and Mark Ditter had eight points. Beau Breece and Kellen Artz had five points each.

Saturday

Sioux Valley 57, Flandreau 38

BALTIC The Cossacks used a strong second half to pull away from the Fliers and win the Big East Conference Tournament championship on Friday night.

Sioux Valley led 12-8 at the end of the first quarter and took a 28-22 lead into halftime. The Cossacks used an 18-9 advantage in the third quarter to take a 47-30 lead into the fourth quarter and out-scored the Fliers 10-8 over the final eight minutes to secure the title.

Engebretson had 16 points, four steals, a rebound and an assist in the win while Squires finished in double figures with 10 points to go with six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Jace Christensen had nine points, seven assists a rebound and a steal while Nelson had eight points, three rebounds and three assists. Hudsyn Ruesink had six points, seven rebounds and an assist.

Parsley led the Fliers with 11 points, six rebounds and five assists. Alfie Henderson and Xavier Bien had eight points and two rebounds each Micah Otto had five points and three rebounds and a steal.

Sioux Valley shot 45 percent from the floor and made 4-of-23 (17.4%). The Cossacks went 1-of-2 (50%) from the free throw line, committed nine turnovers and outrebounded the Fliers 28-20.

Flandreau shot 34 percent from the floor and 6-for-28 (21.4%) on 3-point attempts. The Fliers went 2-for-3 (66.7%) on free throws and committed 16 turnovers.
