As we begin a new year, I thought we could focus on SDSU Extension agronomy events coming up the remainder of the winter. Ive mentioned a few of these in the past, but others are new.
Winter is a great time for us to keep in touch with you, and discuss topics of interest as we plan for the coming spring; come visit in-person or tune in online to become better prepared for the upcoming growing season.
Crop Hour webinar series
This year we are continuing our free, online webinar series after having success the last few years. Please join us for a virtual coffee break every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from Jan. 9-March 7. You may register for the entire event or each individual week, attending only the topics you are most interested in if you wish. The topic schedule is as follows:
- Jan. 9-11: Corn- Best Management Practices for South Dakota Corn
- Jan. 16-18: Precision Ag Precision Ag Practices for Farming
- Jan. 23-25: Soybean Best Management Practices for South Dakota Soybean
- Jan. 30-Feb. 1: Small Grains Importance of Small Grains in South Dakota Cropping Systems
- Feb. 6-8: Soil Health- Carbon is Key to Biological Diversity for Crop Production
- Feb. 13-15: Sunflower and Pulse Crops Best Management Practices for Sunflower and Pulse Production in South Dakota
- Feb. 20-22: Climate and Business Management Climate, Water, and Economics Information for 2023
- Feb. 27-29: Forages Emerging Information on Blister Beetles, Alternative Forages, and Alfalfa Leaf Loss
- March 5-7: Specialty Crops Best Management Practices for Weeds, Tillage, and Diseases in South Dakota

Farm shows/educational seminars
Jan. 3-5: Southeast Research Farm booth and educational seminars at the Dakota Farm Show. The Southeast Research Farm booth can be located all three days of the farm show at #245 in the Dakota Dome at Vermillion. Seminar sessions will run Jan. 3 from 9am-11:30am and 1:30pm-3:45pm, and on Jan. 4 from 10:30am to 11:45am and 1:00pm-3:15pm. Jan. 3 morning session topics cover general agronomy including: carbon, soybean planting/maturity study, impact of N loss inhibitors on corn, and nutrient banding in corn. Afternoon topics focus on weather and pests including: El Nio effects on crops, root rots and pathogens, foliar diseases of importance, and grasshoppers/stem borers/other crop insect concerns. Jan. 4 morning sessions focus on food preparation with talks on: food prep for field crews, food preservation at home, and making nutrient dense snacks. Afternoon sessions focus on livestock and forages and include: plugging backgrounding money leaks in the feedlot, managing growth and energy supply in growing cattle, management strategies and feed additives for receiving calves, and winter annual forage variety trial results. Jan. 11: Watertown Crops Expo with Extension seminars. SDSU Extension will once again be hosting the crops expo at the Codington County Extension Complex in Watertown, SD. The Expo starts at 8 am with a pancake breakfast and covers emerging crop production topics- maximizing soybean yields, managing cover crops in SD, navigating through the sea of carbon, commodity markets and land price trends, and a soil health demonstration. Registration is $10 ($5 for LATC students) and does not require pre-registration. The event is sponsored by several local ag businesses and will help producers and ag professionals to better prepare for the upcoming growing season. Jan. 23-24:South Dakota Soil Health Coalition Annual Soil Health Conference in Rapid City. SDSU Extension partners with SDSHC and will host a booth at the meeting. The Soil Health Conference is hosted by the SD Soil Health Coalition and offers soil-health related demonstrations, in-depth instruction, inspirational stories, networking, and more! Jan. 24-26: SDSU Extension booth and educational seminars at the Sioux Falls Farm Show. SDSU Extension will host booth #1600 in the Sioux Falls Convention Center throughout the show. In addition, educational seminars will be held each day of the show; specifics of the program are TBD. Check siouxfallsfarmshow.com as the event gets closer for more details.
SDSU Extension will also play a role in both the Watertown Farm Show (Feb. 7-10) as well. Stay tuned to our website for more details as these events get near.
