High school girls basketball: Beresford Watchdogs hand Sioux Valley Cossacks first loss of season

VOLGA Sioux Valleys offense went cold in the second and fourth quarters on Tuesday night and that resulted in the Cossacks first loss of the season as Beresford beat them 58-47.

The Cossacks scored just two points in the second quarter but were only trailing by two going into the fourth. Beresford then outscored them 22-13 in the final quarter and came away with the win.

Sioux Valley head coach Jamie Granum said Beresfords two-three zone put the Cossacks into a funk and that led to poor shooting.

It came down to making shots and getting stops, and we couldnt put a lot of that together. They played a zone, and with how we can shoot and space the floor, I kind of thought all along that we were a bucket away from making a run to make it a game. Our bread and butter is shooting the ball. Part of that is on me. With our zone attack, we didnt have a lot of ball movement tonight and they matched with us on the perimeter and we didnt counter, Granum said.

The Cossacks jumped out to an 11-4 lead and then led 16-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Watchdogs (2-2) then scored 16 straight points to go up nine and took a 27-18 lead into halftime.

Sioux Valley opened the third on a 12-3 run and tied things up with 3:43 to play in the quarter. The Cossacks would trail 38-36 at the end of the third but the Watchdogs went on a 12-4 run to open the fourth and that put the game away.

Beresford shot 35.3% from the field and was 6-of-21 from three. Granum said he liked the way his defense played on Tuesday night.

Defensively, we played well enough to win. Offensively, we were a stinker tonight. We just did not shoot the ball well, we didnt move the ball well and we turned it over way too much, Granum said.

The Cossacks shot 35.7% from the field and were 6-of-28 from three. Talya Vincent led Sioux Valley with 15 points and made five 3-pointers. Granum said hes liked the way shes started the season.

Shes an extremely good shooter. Im trying to get her to be more vocal in that point guard position. Shes a kid that people will follow. One, because of her attitude and her effort, and two, because she knows the game of basketball so well, Granum said.

Keyra Kruse had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Cossacks. Kailey Cradduck had 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The Watchdogs were led by Ella Merrigan who had 28 points. Harley Koth had 15 points and five rebounds. Kendra Ellis had seven points.

Beresford had 35 rebounds and Sioux Valley had 25. The Cossacks had 11 turnovers and the Watchdogs had 16. Sioux Valley had nine steals.

Sioux Valley has just one senior that is in its rotation and Granum said that there will be some growing pains with such a young team.

Were a young team. I keep going back to it in the locker room, we sent 55% of our offense out the door with [players graduating]. So, were in a good spot. Well probably play [Beresford] again in the Big East [Tournament]. Its a team that is [also] young, but has a really good guard in Merrigan], Granum said.

The Cossacks are now 3-1 and wont play again until Dec. 29 when they host Sisseton at 6:30 p.m.
