BALTIC The Sioux Valley basketball teams each improved to 2-0 on Thursday night as they both defeated Baltic in the doubleheader.
Boys
Sioux Valley 62, Baltic 50
The Cossacks got off to a slow start as they trailed 19-14 after the first quarter. They then outscored the Bulldogs 20-4 in the second quarter and took a 34-23 lead into the locker room. Baltic would cut the lead to 48-40 at the end of the third but the Cossacks would outscore the Bulldogs 14-10 in the fourth and picked up their second win of the season.
Sioux Valley shot 50% from the field and was 2-of-19 from three. The Cossacks were 6-of-9 at the free throw line.
They were led by SDSU commit Alec Squires who had 30 points and eight rebounds. Max Engebretson and Maverick Nelson each had 11 points. Engebretson also had eight assists and Nelson had five rebounds. Hudsyn Ruesink had eight points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Baltic shot 35.7% from the field and was 7-of-26 from three. The Bulldogs were 3-of-8 at the charity stripe. They were led by Mark Ditter and Jack Erickson who each had 20 points. Ditter had five rebounds as well.
Sioux Valley had 14 turnovers and Baltic had 10. The Cossacks won the rebound battle 28-21.
The Sioux Valley boys will play Beresford next on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
Girls
Sioux Valley 59, Baltic 31
The Cossacks got off to a fast start as they led 21-7 at the end of the first quarter. They would then lead 32-16 at halftime. Sioux Valley stretched its lead to 47-27 at the end of the third and cruised to a victory.
Sioux Valley shot 35.9% from the field and was 10-of-37 from three. The Cossacks were 3-of-7 at the free throw line.
They were led by Kailey Cradduck who had 14 points and five rebounds. Isabelle Bloker had 13 points and six rebounds. Liberty Trygstad and Talya Vincent each had 12 points. Vincent had five rebounds as well.
Baltic shot 34.1% from three and were 0-of-5 from three. The Bulldogs were 3-of-12 at the line. They were led by Harper Kortemeyer who had 11 points and five rebounds.
Sioux Valley had 25 turnovers, but forced 38 turnovers. The Cossacks had 24 steals. They won the rebound battle 33-28.
The Sioux Valley girls will play Dell Rapids St. Mary in the Entringer Classic in Colman on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
