Sioux Valley dominates Flandreau in Volga

VOLGA — Sioux Valley had 13 hits and didn’t give up a hit to Flandreau on Monday as the Cossacks beat the Fliers 18-3 in four innings.

Sioux Valley led 5-0 at the end of the first inning. Kassidy Smith led off the inning with a single and came home on a triple from Morgan Lemme. Savana Guthmiller then hit an RBI single and she and Abby Axtell each scored on a single from Zaylee Lantgen. Lantgen would then score on an error to make it 5-0 heading into the second.

Flandreau scored a run on an error in the top of the second but the Cossacks scored five more runs in the bottom of the inning. Smith led off the bottom of the inning with a home run. Guthmiller then hit an RBI single and Cameron Uecker followed that with a two-run triple. The inning was capped off with an RBI single from Katie Richarz.

The Fliers scored two runs in the top of the third. The first run came on an error and the other came on a pop out from Olivia Peters. The Cossacks extended their lead to 14-3 in the bottom of the inning. Smith scored on an error and Amelia Jacobson scored on a single from Lemme. Guthmiller then hit a two-run home run to give Sioux Valley an 11-run lead heading into the fourth.

Flandreau went down one-two-three in the top of the fourth and the Cossacks scored four runs to end the game in the bottom of the inning. Lemme scored on a fielder’s choice and Axtell then came to the plate with two runners on. She hit one into the gap and rounded the bases for a walk-off three-run home run as the Cossacks won via the 15-run rule.

Guthmiller was 3-for-3 with four RBIs and Axtell was 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Lemme was 2-for-3 with three RBIs Lantgen was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Uecker was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Richarz and Smith were each 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Lantgen pitched all four innings for the Cossacks and gave up three unearned runs and no hits with three strikeouts.

Sioux Valley is now 3-1 and plays at home against Baltic on Thursday at 4 p.m. Flandreau dropped to 3-5 and hosts a doubleheader with Arlington on Tuesday, starting at 4 p.m.
