The Sioux Valley softball team came from behind to pick up their second win of the season on Friday as the Cossacks beat Baltic 15-8.

Sioux Valley Cossacks top Baltic

The Sioux Valley softball team came from behind to pick up their second win of the season on Friday as the Cossacks beat Baltic 15-8.

Sioux Valley fell behind 5-2 in the first inning. Amelia Jacobson hit a one-out single for the Cossacks in the top of the first and Abby Axtell reached on a dropped third strike with two outs to put two runners on. Savana Guthmiller then came to the plate and hit a double to left field and that sent both runners home.

All five of Baltic’s first inning runs came from errors. Sioux Valley would then tie the game in the top of the third. Morgan Lemme and Axtell led off the inning with back-to-back single.s Guthmiller then reached on an error to load the bases up and Katie Richarz hit a two-run single. Guthmiller scored on a steal of home to make it 5-5 heading into the bottom of the third.

Baltic scored a run on a ground out to make it 6-5 heading into the fourth, but the Cossacks scored a run of their own in the top of the inning to tie things back up. Jacobson hit a one-out single and Lemme followed with a double and Jacobson came around to score.

Sioux Valley then struck for four runs in the top of the fifth. Leah Forbes led off the inning with a triple and then scored on an error. Zaylee Lantgen then hit a one-out double to make it 8-6 and

Kassidy Smith followed with a single to make it a three-run game. Smith scored on a ground out to make it 10-6 heading into the bottom of the inning. Baltic hit a home run to lead off the inning but that was it and it was 10-7 heading into the sixth.

Guthmiller led off the sixth with a home run to make it 11-7 heading into the bottom of the inning. The Cossacks scored four more runs in the seventh. Smith led off the inning with a single and then scored on an error. Axtell then hit an RBI double and Guthmiller followed with an RBI triple. Richarz hit an RBI double to make it 15-7. Baltic scored one run on an error in the bottom of the inning to make the final 15-8.

Guthmiller went 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Richarz went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and Smith went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Lemme went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Axtell went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Lantgen went 1-for-5 with an RBI. Jacobson went 2-for-4.

Axtell pitched the first four innings for the Cossacks. She gave up six runs, one earned, on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Lantgen pitched the final three innings and she picked up the win. She gave up two runs, one earned, on one hit with six strikeouts and no walks.
