Rangers finish runner-up at National Championship Tournament

WEST CHESTER, Pa. —  The Brookings Rangers finished as the runner-up at the 2024 USA Hockey-Chipotle High School Division 1 National Championship last weekend.
The Rangers went undefeated in group play at the tournament, defeating Oakdale (Md.) 4-1 on Wednesday, North Broward (Fla.) 4-2 on Thursday and Jesuit (Texas) 4-2 on Friday.

The Rangers won their first two playoff games with a 5-3 win over Owen J. Roberts in the quarterfinals and an 8-0 win over the Centennial Coyotes on Saturday. But the Rangers finished as the runner-up at the tournament for the second straight year, falling 3-2 in overtime to Valor (Colo.) on Sunday morning.

The Rangers finished the season with their fourth straight SDAHA State Championship with a record of 38-2-1.

Brookings 4, Jesuit (Texas) 2

Owen Schneider opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the tournament on the power play from Jay Harris and Ren Jacobsen at 10:47 of the first period.

Wade Bryan tied the game for Jesuit with an assist from Liam Placke 45 seconds into the second period but the Rangers regained the lead with their second power-play goal of the game by Luke Honkomp from Riley Linstad and Schneider 38 seconds later.

The Rangers went into the third period with a 2-1 lead before Schnieder scored his second goal of the game and his fifth goal of the tournament from Jacobsen at 3:34 of the third period. Riley Linstad added an empty net goal with 1:52 to play and the Rangers went on to win the NHL division at the tournament.

Egan Jensen started and made 23 saves for the Rangers. Brookings had 40 shots while Jesuit had 25 shots.

Brookings 5, Owen J. Roberts (Pa.) 3

Talon Hyde scored for the Rangers with assists from David Brink and Schneider at 3:09 of the first period and Brookings added a pair of power play goals by Honkomp from Kahle at 6:41 and Jack Merritt from Brink at 15:42 to go into the first intermission with a 3-0 lead.

Cael Primanti cut into the Rangers’ lead with a goal from Anthony Kuhn at 1:48 of the second period and Primanti scored his second goal of the game shorthanded at 13:50 to make it a 3-2 game.

But Merritt scored his second power-play goal of the game from Brink with 18 seconds left in the second period and Schneider scored his sixth goal of the tournament on a power play from Honkomp and Kahle to give Brookings a 4-2 lead at 1:29 of the third period.

Primanti completed the hat trick on a goal from Maximillian Connell with two minutes to play but Addison Ronning held on by making 25 saves to secure the victory.
Brookings had 41 shots in the game while the Wildcats had 28 shots.

Brookings 8, Centennial (Ariz.) 0

Harris opened the scoring with an assist from Cody Jacobsen at 9:01 of the first period. Jacobsen scored a power play goal from Brink and Cooper Deatherage at 11:27 and Kahle scored a goal from Schneider at 12:34 to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period.

Kahle scored his second goal of the game from Schneider and Harris at 65 seconds into the second period to put Brookings up 4-0 and the Rangers piled on from there as Schneider scored a power-play goal at 7:27 of the second period from Honkomp and Linstad and Jackson Heller scored from Schneider and Honkomp at 7:49 of the second period.

Parker Nielsen added to the lead with a goal from Schneider at 11:14 of the second period and Deatherage capped the scoring with a goal from Harris and Linstad at 14:07 of the second period.

Ronning made 15 saves in the shutout while Brookings out-shot the Coyotes 34-15.

Valor (Colo.) 3, Brookings 2 (OT)

Ronan Hirschfield put Valor up early with a goal from Maddux Charles at 8:19 of the first period but Kahle scored a power play goal from Schneider and Honkomp to tie the game at 1-1 with 1:21 left in the first period.

After a scoreless second period, the Rangers took the lead 50 seconds into the third period when Kahle scored a power play from Honkomp and Schneider. But Maddux Charles scored from Carter Charles with 3:01 left in regulation to tie the game at 2-2 and send it into overtime.

Carter Charles scored the game-winning goal for the Screaming Eagles from Maddux Charles with 5:44 left in overtime.

Ronning made 35 saves for Brookings. The Rangers had 34 shots while the Screaming Eagles had 38.
