Norma A. Wiig, age 89 of Brookings passed away peacefully on Monday, April 15, at The Neighborhoods at Brookview.
She was born on the family farm Jan. 5, 1935, in Sherman County, Nebraska the daughter of Glenn H. and Anna C. (Weiss) Kenyon. Norma attended a small country school until the 8th grade before graduating from Grand Island Senior High in 1952. Norma earned a business degree in high school where she learned secretarial skills and spent many years in that capacity throughout her life.
On March 19, 1954, she was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Wallace W. Wiig. Norma supported her husband and earned her PhT (Putting Hubby Through) degree while he attended the University of Nebraska Lincoln. She was a busy homemaker dedicating her life to care for her family. Wally’s career took them on many moves throughout the Midwest. In 1972 one of those moves landed them in Marshalltown, IA, where she worked with three family physicians at the Marshalltown Medical Clinic as the sole medical transcriptionist and office manager until 1981. Their last move was to Brookings, SD, in 1988. While in Brookings, Norma had a significant role in the life of her grandson, Blayne. She retired in 1994 from Brookings Health System where she worked as a receptionist/switchboard operator. She enjoyed reading, gardening, bird watching and their many beloved pets through the years.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband Wallace of 70 years; daughters, Lianne (Jim) Wiig Von Eschen of Norfolk, NE; Laurie Wiig Hoffman of Houston, TX; Cynthia (Gary) Forbes of Groveland, Florida, and Sheri Wiig of Aurora, SD; grandchildren, Patricia (Jason) Lammli, Carley Harwood, Jarrod Forbes, Rachel Forbes, Blayne (Danielle) Wiig, and Samuel Wiig Hoffman; and six great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Dean and Harlon Kenyon.
No formal services will take place, as Norma requested, but we do appreciate your love and support during this difficult time. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the staff of The Neighborhoods at Brookview and Brookings Health System Home Health & Hospice for their loving care.
