Mary Margaret Powers, 94, of Flandreau, SD, passed away with her sons by her side on Monday, April 22, 2024 at Avera Flandreau Hospital.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 26, at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church in Flandreau, SD. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 25 at Skroch Funeral Chapel in Flandreau, SD.
Mary Margaret Powers was born June 2, 1929, in the Flandreau Hospital to Marie (Smith) and Joseph Burns. Mary attended Spafford Elementary and graduated from Flandreau High School in 1947. Mary received a two-year teaching certificate from General Beadle College (Dakota State). She taught seventh and eighth grade English in Canton, SD for one year.
She married John “Pete” Powers on July 10, 1950, at Ss Simon & Jude Catholic Church in Flandreau, SD. She taught in rural schools and later helped with the family business.
Mary belonged to the Athena Literary Club, was a charter member and past Regent of the Catholic Daughters, and belonged to several bridge clubs and Mahjong groups. She enjoyed reading and volunteering.
Mary is survived by her sons, Patrick and Paul (Jill); grandchildren, Amy, Shaun, Kelli Brune (Chris); great-grandchildren, J.P., Amara, Ella, Rylee, Rowyn, and Sawyer; one brother, Robert Burns (Donna); sisters-in-law, Sheila Burns, Rita Burns, and Marilyn Powers.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, husband (2000), infant sister, and brothers, William, Charles, James, and Richard.
