Jackrabbits add five to 2024 roster

The South Dakota State volleyball program has announced the addition of five student-athletes to the roster for the upcoming 2024 season. Alyssa Groves, Camryn Honn, Sophie Johnson, Nicole Medlin and Rachel Wieber will all join the Jackrabbits as transfers.

Jackrabbits add five to 2024 roster

The South Dakota State volleyball program has announced the addition of five student-athletes to the roster for the upcoming 2024 season. Alyssa Groves, Camryn Honn, Sophie Johnson, Nicole Medlin and Rachel Wieber will all join the Jackrabbits as transfers.

“Our staff is excited to finally announce the additions of Alyssa, Camryn, Nicole, Rachel, and Sophie! This group brings a great influx of experience and success from their previous programs,” said head coach Dan Georgalas. “They will add some serious talent to every position group in our gym so we’re eager to welcome them to Brookings this summer. Our current roster had a terrific semester of training and we know these additions will be a great fit for our culture and locker room. Go Jacks!”

Alyssa Groves

Graduate 6-4 Opposite, Slayton, Minn., Colorado State

Alyssa Groves transfers to South Dakota State after a four-year career at Colorado State.

Groves appeared in 107 sets and 60 total matches for the Rams. She tallied 95 kills at a .249 clip at Colorado State to go with 48 total blocks. She was a member of the 2021 squad that won the Mountain West regular season title.

Groves graduated from Murray County Central High School in 2020. She was a four-year letter winner and three-time all-conference honoree in the Red Rock Conference. Groves led the team in kills and blocks as a junior.

Groves plans to study health and exercise science at SDSU. She is the daughter of Dawn Groves and Randy Groves. Her father, Randy, and her brother, Tyler, are both South Dakota State graduates.

Camryn Honn

Graduate 5-7 Setter, Overland Park, Kan., New Hampshire

Camryn Honn transfers in to the Jackrabbit program after two seasons at Jacksonville and two seasons at New Hampshire.

As a senior at New Hampshire in 2023, Honn ranked second on the team in assists (463) and was fourth in digs (173). Honn ranked fifth in total assists and sixth in assists per set (5.26) in the American East that season. She appeared in 20 matches in 2022, where she was third on the team in assists (213) and sixth in digs (95). Her .43 aces per set ranked second in the American East.

Honn played her freshman and sophomore seasons at Jacksonville University. She saw action in 27 matches in the fall of 2021 and led JU with 698 assists on the season. She registered double-digit assists in every match, including a season-high 59 against LIU, and had eight total performances with at least 30 assists. Honn was also third on the team with 228 digs. Honn’s freshman season was played in the spring of 2021, where she was Jacksonville’s primary setter. She dished 498 assists, the most on the team and top-five in the ASUN. Honn set her career highs of 61 assists and 21 digs against Stetson that spring. She had at least 30 assists in seven matches.

Honn prepped at Blue Valley Northwest High School. She was a MO-KAN All-Star Game participant and was an all-state honorable mention as a senior. She earned first-team all-conference honors as a senior and second-team accolades as a junior.

Honn plans to study economics at SDSU. She is the daughter of Josh and Shannon Honn.

Sophie Johnson

Graduate 5-8 Setter/Defensive Specialist, Hendricks, Minn., Dordt

Sophie Johnson comes to South Dakota State following stops at Dordt and Southwest Minnesota State.

Johnson played two seasons at Dordt University in Sioux Center, Iowa, where she appeared in every match during the 2022 and 2023 campaigns. She surpassed 1,000 collegiate assists in her most recent season and set new career single-match highs of 48 assists and 18 digs. As a freshman at SMSU in 2021, Johnson appeared in all 29 matches with 17 starts. She was second on team in total assists with 248 and was fourth in digs with 161.

Johnson is a 2020 graduate of Hendricks High School, where she was a two-time first team all-conference performer in volleyball. She finished her high school career with 1,750 kills, 1,616 digs and 293 aces. Johnson also competed in basketball, gymnastics, track and golf at Hendricks. She was the state runner-up in the pole vault as a senior.
Johnson plans to study sport and recreation at SDSU. She is the daughter of Gary and Sherri Johnson. Johnson’s sister, Greta, was a pole vaulter on SDSU’s track and field team from 2018-23. Her father, Gary, is also a Jackrabbit alum.

Nicole Medlin

Graduate 6-0 Middle Blocker Fort Smith, Ark., University of Colorado, Colorado Springs

Nicole Medlin makes the move to Brookings following two seasons at Colorado Springs and two seasons at Little Rock.

Medlin spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons at Colorado Springs, where she started every match for the Mountain Lions. She was an RMAC honorable mention as a senior as she led the team in hitting percentage (.310) and total blocks (69). She set a new career high with 25 digs against Adams State. Medlin also led the team with 76 blocks as a junior in 2022. She notched a career-high eight blocks against Lubbock Christian.

At Little Rock in 2020 and 2021, Medlin played in 170 sets across 49 matches. She hit .301 over two seasons and totaled 331 kills, 12 service aces, six assists, 63 digs and 149 blocks (14 solo).

Medlin graduated from Northside High School in 2020. She ranked 14th in the nation in hitting percentage as a senior and made the all-star team. She was also the student body president.

Medlin will study sport and recreation management at SDSU. She is the daughter of Christy and Jon Medlin.

Rachel Wieber

Senior 5-10 Outside Hitter/Defensive Specialist, Faribault, Minn., Southern Utah

Rachel Wieber transfers to SDSU after one playing season at Southern Utah.

Wieber appeared in 16 matches and 50 total sets for the Thunderbirds as a freshman in 2021. She tallied 117 digs that season, including a career-high 23 against Utah State. She also had a career-best four aces against Long Island.

Wieber graduated from Northfield High School in 2021. She was a four-time volleyball conference champion with the Raiders. Wieber was also 2019 U.S. Junior Nationals All-American.

Wieber is studying nursing at South Dakota State. She has a number of family members who are SDSU alums, including her great grandfather, Herbert Schulte (basketball) and great aunt Mary Schulte (volleyball). Her mother, Michelle, was a member of four Big Ten championships as a gymnast at Ohio State.

These five signees will join incoming freshmen Madison Burr and Taylor Byl as newcomers to the 2024 squad.
