Helen Humphries, 66, of Brookings, passed away on April 7, 2024, at the Brookings hospital following a courageous battle with cancer.
A time of visitation will be held on Friday, April 12, at Eidsness Funeral Home from 5 until 6 p.m. An informal service celebrating Helen’s life and sharing of memories will begin at 6 p.m. the same evening.
Helen Marie Humphries was born on Feb. 15, 1958, in Aberdeen, SD, to Maurice and Gladys (Ronning) Humphries. Helen spent much of her youth on the family farm near Barnard until August of 1967. The family then lived in Aberdeen until 1975, when she moved to Sioux Falls, SD. Helen later moved to Brookings, SD, in 2010. Helen attended Barnard School, Henry Neill Elementary, Simmons Junior High, and graduated from Central High School.
During her time in Sioux Falls, Helen worked for Raven Industries for many years. Following her move to Brookings, she began working at Daktronics, where she enjoyed working for over 13 years.
Helen was a faithful woman of God, and was a member of the United Church of Christ in her younger years.
Helen had many interests throughout her life, and most involved being outdoors and staying active. She absolutely loved being outside and enjoyed canoeing, biking, yoga, and motorcycle riding with Steve. When she was found indoors, she loved to color in adult coloring books as well as watch her beloved Green Bay Packers play football. Helen was an avid Green Bay fan, a pastime that she enjoyed sharing with her son, David. When she was not watching Green Bay, she could often be found watching NASCAR races.
She loved sunflowers, especially those in the style of Van Gogh art pieces. Helen also loved animals, especially cats, which was a love that she shared with her son, Chris. They could often be found spoiling the four cats that they shared together. Helen talked often of the joy of her grandsons Gavin, Chad and Heather’s son, and Chris’ son, Kaden.
Helen is survived by her sons: Chad Walth and his wife, Heather, Christopher Pekoske, and David Pekoske and his significant other, Kaitlyn Stark; grandchildren: Gavin and Kaden; siblings: Diana Longmore and her husband, Dave, Gene Humphries and his wife Susan, Gail Burkhart, and her husband Jerry, Rick Humphries, and his wife, Sherrie, and Lori Felton, and her husband, John; a sister-in-law, Kathy Humpries; and her special friend, Steve Harvey.
She is preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; brother Darrell; and sister Nancy.
In lieu of flowers, family suggests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the Brookings Regional Humane Society in Helen's name.
