David Knutson SR., 78, of Brookings, passed away in the early morning hours of April 9, 2024 at his home.
A memorial service will be held at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings on Thursday, April 18, at 11 a.m. Burial will take place immediately following the service at Greenwood Cemetery. David and his wife Sandra will be interred together following their wishes. Following services, all are invited to a gathering at the Knutson farm, 21131 467th Avenue, Brookings to continue celebrating David’s life. Visitation will take place the evening prior, Wednesday, April 17, from 5 until 7 p.m. at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings.
David Knutson was born on March 15, 1946, in Brookings, SD to Kenneth and Ethel (Scheusner) Knutson. The family lived in Brookings until moving to the farm in 1951. David attended Country School District No. 3 through eighth grade followed by Brookings High School for a couple of years, later going on to farm with his father. In October of 1964, David was united in marriage to Sandra Lindahl, and to this union four children were born. In October of 1988, he married the love of his life, Sandra Sybrant. Sandra passed away in February of 2020.
Throughout his life, David primarily worked as a farmer, but he also worked as a truck driver for several different companies. From 1964 until 1970 David was a member of the Army National Guard 741st Transportation Company. He was honorably discharged in 1970. He also worked on bridge construction for Swingers Construction Company.
David was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Volga for many years, as well as the American Legion Post No. 114.
Throughout his life David enjoyed fishing in his Lund boats, hunting, woodworking, camping, traveling south for the winter, visiting casinos, and going for drives. Later in his life, he enjoyed caring for his many cats on the farm and his flower gardens. One of the greatest joys in David’s life was watching his grandchildren at sporting events as well as spending time with his family and friends enjoying a cold one.
David is survived by his children: Debra (Dale “Bud”) Michael, of Amiret, MN, Mary (Karl) Pepperman, of Volga, SD, David Jr., of Brookings, SD, and Robert (Mindie) of Brookings; stepdaughter Tammy (Ryan) Schiller, of Volga, SD; stepson Troy (Esmeralda) Brown, of Woodland Park, CO; ten grandchildren: Kelli, Brittnee, Joshua, Zachary, Jessica, Hayden, David, Brooke, Carson, and Rylee; three step grandsons: Tyge, Jaxton, and Boden; 7 great-grandchildren: Jimmy, Chase, Hanna, Nora, Teegan, Kason, and Everly Jo; two sisters: Patty Shuck of Lenexa, KS, and Peggy (Lyle) Johnson, of Brookings, SD.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Sandra; parents Kenneth and Ethel Knutson; and brother-in-law, Duane Shuck.
As he touched so many lives, Dave will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Blessed be his memory!
