Cossacks sweep doubleheader in Milbank

MILBANK — The Sioux Valley Cossacks swept a doubleheader as they defeated Milbank by scores of 9-0 and 21-2 on Monday afternoon.

The Cossacks improved to 7-2 on the season with the wins and will host a doubleheader against Colman-Egan in Volga beginning at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Sioux Valley 9, Milbank 0

The Cossacks struck early as Kassidy Smith led off the game with a single before stealing second base and advancing to third base on an error. Amelia Jacobson grounded out to plate Smith in the following at-bat before Sioux Valley got back-to-back singles from Morgan Lemme and Abby Axtell to set up a two-out rally highlighted by Zaylee Lantgen’s RBI single and RBI doubles by Cameron Uecker and Summer Guthmiller to give the Cossacks a 5-0 lead.

Sioux Valley added to its lead when Guthmiller drove in a run with another double in the top of the third inning and scored two more runs in the top of the fourth inning with a double by Axtell and singles by Riley Stirling and Uecker.

The runs were enough for Lantgen in the circle, who tossed a five-inning shutout allowing four hits and a walk while striking out nine batters.
Uecker finished 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two RBI while Guthmiller finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and three runs batted in. Langen finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Axtell went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Smith had a single and a stolen base, Jacobson went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Stirling went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk.

Sioux Valley 21, Milbank 2

Sioux Valley jumped out to another early lead as Smith drove in a run with a single and later scored on Addisyn Krause’s error to put the Cossacks up 2-0. Sioux Valley scored two more runs in the opening frame when Stirling scored on Allie Meyer’s error and Katie Richarz drove in a run with a groundout, setting the stage for an 11-run second inning.

Jacobson started the rally with a double and Smith followed with a walk before three runs scored on a pair of errors to put the Cossacks up 7-0. Guthmiller and Uecker continued the rally with back-to-back walks before Lantgen drove in a run with a single, Richarz drove in two runs with a single and Leah Forbes drove in a run with a double to go ahead 11-0.

The Cossacks scored two more runs when Sydney VanBeek scored on a passed ball and Forbes scored on an error and Guthmiller drove in two more runs to finish the second inning with a 15-0 lead.

A groundout by VanBeek, three errors an RBI single by Guthmiller gave Sioux Valley a 21-0 lead in the top of the third inning before Abigail Pillatzki drove in a run with a double and Joce Kettwig drove in a run with a single to finish the game in the bottom of the third.

Axtell earned the win in the circle allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

Guthmiller finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. Lantgen went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI. Forbes went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, Ella Jacobson went 1-for-1 with a single and a run scored. Smith went 1-for-1 with two runs scored, an RBI, a walk and two stolen bases. Stirling had two walks and scored four times while Richarz went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
