Every year since 2017, Tim Fryer of Hendricks, Minn., has claimed the Arbor Day 5K, which is sponsored by Prairie Striders Running Club. This year was no exception, even though he ran almost 121 miles the weekend before.
As in every year since 2018, the 2024 runner-up was Trevor Hinderaker of Astoria, who finished one second behind (18:54 to 18:55).
On April 20-21, Fryer was at Wilson State Park in Kansas for the Eternal Damnation Backyard Ultra, a last-man standing event. He completed 29 loops of 4.167-mile course for 120.84 miles — and finished second. Last year he won by running the same distance.
The 2024 winner had one more loop, 125.1 total miles. Fryer ran from 8 a.m. Saturday to 1 p.m. Sunday.
The April 26 race was much shorter, but he said the last mile was still a challenge. Both he and Hinderaker plan to run the Brookings Half Marathon May 11.
The third-place Arbor Day finisher was Blake Johnson in 19:11.
Despite threatening weather, the free race still drew 54 participants, including about 20 college freshmen.
The event is co-sponsored by the City of Brookings Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department with participants receiving a free red oak seedling. The race was staged in cooperation with the Brookings County Outdoor Adventure Center.
