SIOUX FALLS – Winner polished off an undefeated season and spoiled West Central’s shot at perfection in the process with a 60-53 win in the Class A State Girls’ Basketball Tournament finale Saturday night at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.
The Warriors were up 15-14 after 8 minutes but the Trojans moved ahead 36-32 at the half.
Winner regained the lead after three – 49-44 – and held on down the stretch.
Gabriel Kocer scored a game-high 21 points in the victory.
Bella Swedlund posted a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds. Kalla Bertram dropped in 10 points off the bench and Morgan Hammerbeck added nine.
West Central’s Kali Nelson scored 20 points and reserve Shaw Nelson chipped in with 11. Cassidy Siemonsma had eight points, 12 boards and four assists.
Second-seeded Winner, which had a regular-season game canceled, finished the year with a 24-0 record. Top-seeded West Central ended up 24-1.
• Lennox 43, McCook Central/Montrose 41
Rianna Fillipi made two free throws with 35 seconds left to lift the Orioles over the Fighting Cougars.
It was Lennox 8-2 after a quarter, 17-15 at halftime and 29-26 through three in the back-and-forth matchup.
The Orioles’ Madysen Vlastuin had 17 points and eight boards. Riley Peters added 11 markers.
MCM’s Ashtyn Wobig totaled 16 points and Abigail Van Ruler finished with seven to go with 10 rebounds.
• Todd County 63, St. Thomas More 51
The Lady Falcons capped a solid season by handing the five-time defending champions their second loss in the tourney.
STM was up 13-7 after 8 minutes. Todd County led 34-30 at halftime and 48-43 through three.
TC’s Kelsie Herman had 21 points, Alanis Murray 13, Raven Cournoyer 11 and Haylee Quick Bear seven to go with 10 boards.
Haleigh Timmer finished with 27 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals for the Cavs.
• Mt. Vernon/Plankinton 53, Aberdeen Roncalli 50
The Titans made stops down the stretch and sank enough free throws to beat the Lady Cavaliers.
Hailey Walz made a pair of foul shots with 1:32 left to put MVP ahead 51-50 and added another freebie with 20 seconds to go. Katlyn Briggs went 1-of-2 with 10 seconds remaining to make it 53-50.
Roncalli was ahead 20-13 after a quarter, 33-26 at halftime and 44-43 entering the fourth.
MVP got 15 points from Mikaela Cassidy and 14 by Emilee Fox. Briggs added nine points and 10 boards.
Roncalli’s Jami Ewart had 16 points and Mariah Winegar and Megan Streier both put in 15.
