BROOKINGS – Undefeated Harrisburg pulled away late for a 65-46 defeat of the Bobcats in a girls’ basketball matchup Thursday night at Bob Jostad Gymnasium.

The Tigers were up 18-8 after a quarter. Brookings scored the first seven points in the second – Ainsley Shelsta and Landree Wilson had buckets and Regan Weisbeck canned a 3-pointer – to cut the deficit to 18-15.

Harrisburg pushed the margin back to 10 points – 32-22 – at halftime.

The Bobcats got as close as eight points – 40-32 – late in the third after Allie Clark buried a trey and Shelsta scored in the paint, but the Tigers took a 46-35 advantage into the fourth.

A Johanna Miller traditional three-point play cut the margin to 47-38 with 7:32 showing on the clock; however, that would be as close as the home team would get the remainder of the game.

Later, Harrisburg used a 12-2 spurt to move ahead 62-42 with 2:05 remaining.

Abby Phipps, who missed a majority of the third period with an injury, led a balanced attack with 14 points for Harrisburg, which improved to 10-0.

Emilee Boyer and Brecli Honner both had 11 points, Carolyn Haar nine and Sydney Hybertson seven.

The Tigers shot 44.2 percent from the field, including a 9-of-20 clip from long range, and corralled 13 offensive rebounds.

“There were some good things we saw,” said BHS coach Mitch McLagan. “Our turnover count was down – 14 was our lowest of the year – so I thought we did that really well.

“Defensively, we weren’t very good again tonight. We helped off of shooters we weren’t supposed to; we didn’t close out very well; and then they got a lot of offensive rebounds. That’s stuff we have to clear up. If you’re going to compete – we gave ourselves a chance towards the end of the game, but to beat those good teams you can’t give up that many offensive rebounds.”

Ainsley Shelsta dropped in a game-high 15 points in 18 1/2 minutes off the bench for the Bobcats. She was 7-of-11 from the floor.

Clark, who hit a trio of treys, contributed nine points, Wilson eight and Miller five.

Brookings (0-9) is host to Yankton in the front end of a doubleheader Tuesday at 6 p.m.
