Unbeatens match up in regular-season finale

Tonight’s regular-season finale features a pair of undefeated Class 11AA teams as Brookings is host to Yankton.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium. The forecast is calling for a chilly, wet evening with temperatures dropping to the low 30s.

Brookings is outscoring its opponents an average of 42.63-11.88 per game.

Yankton is at 39.13-14.88.

“Yankton is very athletic, they’re aggressive, they run the ball well and they’re very well-coached,” said BHS coach Brady Clark. “They’re probably the best team that we’ve faced so far this year so we’re really looking forward to the opportunity.”

Brookings is putting up 303.1 rushing yards per contest.

Josh Buri logs 140.9 yards per game and an incredible 12.3 per rush with 17 scores on 92 carries.

The defense is balanced as Wes Koenig has 46 tackles, Parker Theobald 44, Max Struck 39, John Noordsy 38 and Carter Wright and Jaxton Eck 31 apiece.

8-0 vs. 8-0

“Our message this week has just been ‘stay focused and have fun,’” noted Clark. “As far as the focus part, there is a lot going on in Brookings right now and there are a lot of distractions.

“We have an opportunity here to show the state who we truly are and what we’re capable of – you know, come out with the victory and be the No. 1 team. We have to focus in order to do that.

“Another thing is the ‘having fun’ part. Seniors, you know, this is their last regular-season football game of their high school career. We say it all the time – ‘it goes fast’ – but it goes in one ear and out the other. And then finally the last week of the regular season is here and their jaws drop when you say it again.

“The biggest thing I want for them to do is focus and just have fun – enjoy every single moment – because they’ll never get something like this back again.”

Last week

The Bobcats hit the road and beat Spearfish 63-0, gaining a wealth of experience for their less-experienced players.

The Bucks dropped Douglas 42-14 at home.

Last year

Brookings won 44-14 in Yankton.

Biggest key

“Line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball,” Clark said.

DEFENSE

“We need to contain their quarterback,” he added. “We can’t miss tackles.

“We need to play confidently. When we do that, we play fast and we play aggressively. So that’s our goal there.”

OFFENSE

“Controlling the clock, controlling the tempo of the game and no turnovers,” Clark said.
