CANCUN, Mexico – The program’s 1,000th victory was a significant one as South Dakota State defeated Notre Dame 65-59 in the Cancun Challenge on Friday morning at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya.
The Jackrabbits opened the game on a 15-2 run. They were up 18-11 after a quarter and 34-21 at halftime before seeing the lead peak at 16 points – 40-24 – at the 7:16 mark of the third.
The Fighting Irish (4-4), who went 8-of-12 from the field in the third, countered with a 24-5 spurt. They pulled even at 45-all through three and then moved ahead 48-45 on Anaya Peoples’ traditional three-point play with 9:21 remaining in the game.
Paiton Burckhard answered with a bucket and Tori Nelson hit a 3-pointer. The game was tied for the final time – 50-50 – following Marta Sniezek’s transition bucket with 7:17 showing on the clock.
The Jackrabbits used a 10-2 run to take control.
Selland hit a pair of free throws with 6:00 to go and Burckhard scored with 5:27 left.
Peoples converted on the other end for ND with 5:11 to play.
Nelson and Burckhard had back-to-back buckets, the latter coming with 3:37 left, and Selland hit a short jumper to make it 60-52 at the 2:59 mark.
Later, the Fighting Irish’s Katlyn Gilbert buried a jumper and Sam Brunelle knocked down a trey to cut the deficit to 61-59 with 48 seconds left.
Selland’s driving basket with 33 seconds to play made it a two-possession game.
Nelson posted her first collegiate double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Burckhard (6-of-7) and Selland (6-of-8) scored 14 points apiece on combined 12-of-15 shooting. Both grabbed six boards, with Selland dishing out seven assists.
SDSU dominated the glass 53-25, including 18-5 on the offensive end.
South Dakota State (5-2), which beat No. 21 South Florida 61-50 on Thursday, closes the event taking on Florida Gulf Coast today at 12:30 p.m.
Notes: It marked SDSU’s first win over Notre Dame in three meetings. … The Jackrabbits’ all-time record is 1,000-427.
