Sioux Valley defeats De Smet; Lady Elks edge Flandreau Indian

VOLGA – Sioux Valley beat De Smet 47-45 in a Lake Central Conference girls’ basketball game Tuesday night.

The Lady Bulldogs were up 12-10 after 8 minutes and 19-16 at halftime. The Cossacks moved ahead 31-28 through three.

A Carly Granum 3-pointer made it 34-28 with 7 1/2 minutes to play, before De Smet answered with six consecutive points to knot things up at 34-all.

Granum hit another trey with 4 minutes remaining and Sioux Valley never trailed again.

Rachel Miller later converted an old-fashioned 3-point play and Lynsey Stevens followed with a basket to give the Cossacks a 42-35 cushion with 2:41 showing on the clock.

De Smet cut the deficit to 45-43 after Kristen Poppen made a pair of fouls shots and added a putback with 8 seconds left.

Miakken Vincent sealed the deal with two free throws soon thereafter, making it 47-43.

Stevens finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Vincent had 13 points and five boards. Granum hit three 3s for nine points. Cassie Rawden totaled six points and seven dimes.

For the Lady Bulldogs, Poppen posted a big double-double with 17 points and 23 rebounds.

Sioux Valley (11-5, 2-1) heads to Flandreau on Friday. De Smet (11-4, 2-2) plays at James Valley Christian on Saturday.

FLANDREAU – Callie Otkin scored 19 points as the Elks rallied past the Lady Indians.

ELB was up 11-9 after a quarter, but FIS grabbed a 20-16 halftime advantage and was ahead 32-30 heading to the fourth.

Samantha Schindler added eight points and Aubrey Wirth sixth.

For FIS, Joanna Fallis scored 15 points.

Both teams return to action Friday, with Elkton-Lake Benton (9-5) heading to Deubrook Area and Flandreau Indian School playing host to Hendricks, Minn.

 Lake Preston 57, Great Plains Lutheran 48

WATERTOWN – Meriah Flegel dropped in 20 points as the Divers defeated the Panthers.

Lake Preston was up 12-8 after a quarter, 26-17 at halftime and 41-31 through three.

Lexie Larsen added 13 points and Ashlyn DeKnikker 12. Olivia Christensen chipped in with six markers and Lindsay Hillestad four.

GPL got 14 points from Erika Gosch and 11 by Camryn Buelow.

GPL (3-11) welcomes Wilmot on Thursday and Lake Preston (9-7) is host to Colman-Egan on Friday.

 Hamlin 63, Arlington 23

ARLINGTON – The Chargers opened up a 17-4 advantage after a quarter and were ahead 39-8 at halftime.

Lexi Wadsworth totaled 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks.

Brynn Alfson and Stacia West added 12 points apiece while combining for 12 boards.

Hamlin shot 55.3 percent (26-of-47) from the field and limited Arlington to 24.3 percent (9-of-37).

The Cardinals’ Jeryn Christensen had eight points, Jayna Haufschild seven and Madysn Gilbertson six.

Arlington (6-9) heads to Dell Rapids St. Mary and Hamlin (13-2) plays host to Webster Area on Friday.

 Waverly-South Shore 56, Estelline 21

ESTELLINE – Four players scored in double figures for the undefeated Coyotes, who led 19-4 after a quarter, 34-12 at halftime and 51-19 through three.

Ali Kranz had 15 points, Payton Comes 11, and Kylie Carpenter and Erin Comes 10 apiece. Payton comes grabbed eight rebounds, while Kranz came up with six of the tea’s 21 steals. WSS forced 25 turnovers.

The Lady Redmen’s Marissa Golas scored seven points and Kylie Beare six. Brinn Begalka added four points and 10 boards.

WSS (13-0) plays host to Waubay/Summit on Thursday and Estelline (3-12) is host to Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Friday.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

• Great Plains Lutheran 64, Lake Preston 52

Aiden Holien scored 25 points, Tristan Scharlemann 13 and Jordan Kjenstad 11 to lead the Panthers past the Divers.

GPL led 17-8 after a quarter and the score was tied at 25-all at halftime. The Panthers outscored the Divers 21-11 in the third to move ahead 46-36.

Lake Preston (3-13) plays host to Colman-Egan on Thursday. Great Plains Lutheran (7-7) is host to Wilmot on Friday.

Estelline 39

ESTELLINE – Brandon Eschen scored 17 points and Vincent Ramos added 14 as the Coyotes improved to 3-11 with the 55-39 win over the Redmen.

Riley Benning led Estelline, 0-15, with 13 points;  Marcis Hausman finished with 11 and Davon Dahl had eight.
