WATERTOWN – Seven Bobcats – highlighted by champions Luke Rasmussen and Nolan Archer – qualified for state at the Region 1A Boys’ Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at the Civic Arena.
The host Arrows won the team title with 230.5 team points and Tea Area was second at 174.
Brookings ended up sixth with a 121.5 total.
Rasmussen, a junior and the runner-up at state at 182 pounds a year ago, continued his dominance in the 195-pound weightclass this season – moving his record to 28-0.
He spent 2 minutes, 25 seconds on the mat in the regional.
Following an opening bye, Rasmussen pinned Tea Area’s Isaac Johnson in 1:25 in the semifinals and stuck Watertown’s Brock Eitreim in a minute in the final.
Archer, competing at 182, also pinned his way to the title.
He dropped West Central’s Gabe Gebhardt in 1:05 in the quarters, Watertown’s Tyle Rudebusch in 4:57 in the semis and Dell Rapids’ Mitchell Klinkenborg in 2:45 in the final.
James Olson ended up second at 220.
He pinned West Central’s Logan Brunick in 4:31 and Tea Area’s Griffen Schnider in 4:39. Watertown’s
Connor Wirtjes won by fall in 4:45 versus Olson in the championship matchup.
Samson Flakus finished third in the 285-pound division.
Flakus received a bye but then fell 3-0 to the Arrows’ Tyler Dean. He won via forfeit versus West Central’s Gavin Pischke in the consolation semifinals and then picked up a 10-4 decision versus Madison’s Tyler Reck in the third-place bout.
Nolan Miles (106), Spencer Christie (113) and Gabriel Stern (126) each placed fourth.
After getting a bye, Milles was pinned by the Trojans’ Chandler Carda in 2:34 in the semis. He majored the Titans’ Jackson Tschetter 13-1 in the match to go to state and then medically forfeited in the third-place match.
Christie notched a 4-2 decision over Madison’s Carson Wolf in the quarters but lost by fall in 1:43 to Tea Area’s Quncy Hulverson (40-0 record) in the semis. He edged O’Gorman’s Chancellor Haber to qualify for state before falling in 1:47 against the Trojans’ Jude Jarding in the third-place contest.
Stern fell in 1:55 in a quarter against the Bulldogs’ Isaac Henry. Following a forfeit victory over Sioux Falls Roosevelt’s Jose Mendez-Garcia, he advanced to state with a 16-14 sudden victory over the Arrows’ Nathan Briggs. He was pinned by West Central’s Keaton Vessells in 58 seconds in the third-place match.
Israel Caldron (160) placed fifth and Will Bauer (170) dropped both his matches.
The Class A State Wrestling Tournament is Thursday through Saturday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City.
