BROOKINGS – Luke Ringhofer homered as South Dakota State beat Omaha 5-3 in a Summit League baseball game Thursday at Erv Huether Field.

The third-place Jackrabbits (23-22, 16-12) have won six consecutive games, while the fifth-place Mavericks (12-38, 9-17) were eliminated from postseason contention following their seventh loss in a row.

Grant Suponchick provided UNO with an early lead via a one-out RBI double in the top of the first inning.

SDSU’s Nick Smith led off the bottom of the first with a single. Ringhofer later drilled an 0-1 pitch over the fence in right field with one out to give the Jackrabbits a 2-1 lead. It was his first round-tripper of the season.

Matt Johnson followed with a double and Josh Kunzmann’s two-out hit put runners on the corners; however, a fly out ended the inning.

The Mavericks pulled even in the top of the second on Jack Kalina’s run-scoring single with one out.

The Jackrabbits took the lead for good in the fourth frame.

Landon Badger drew a two-out walk and stole second base, before Skyler Wenninger drove him in with a double to put the hosts on top 3-2.

Tony Kjolsing singled and Ringhofer walked with one away in the seventh. Matt Johnson came through with an RBI single and Newt Johnson drove in Ringhofer with a fielder’s choice to push the margin to 5-2.

UNO opened the eighth with three consecutive singles as Suponchick picked up his second RBI of the game to provide for the final margin.

Ringhofer and Matt Johnson both finished 2-for-4.

Tyler Olmstead (2-0) worked four innings to pick up the win on the mound, allowing two runs on four hits and a pair of walks with four strikeouts.

Derek Feige gavve up one run on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts over the next four frames.

Chris Halbur worked around a walk and a hit in the ninth – being aided by a double play – to notch his eighth save of the season.

For the Mavericks, Suponchick, Kalina and Cole Thibodeau each went 2-for-4. Kalina doubled.

Sam Murphy (3-8) took the loss after surrendering three runs on six hits and five walks with four strikeouts over six innings. Suponchick pitched the seventh, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks.

SDSU and UNO wrap up the regular season with a doubleheader today at 1 p.m.

Notes: SDSU leads the season series 4-0, having swept the Mavericks on March 17-19 in Omaha by the scores of 5-2, 15-0 (seven innings) and 13-4.
