SIOUX FALLS – Summit League champions South Dakota State claimed all four of the Summit League’s postseason honors for cross country as Leah Hansen and Gabe Peters were selected as athletes the year and Rod DeHaven earned coach of the year honors in both the men’s and women’s divisions.
Hansen, a sophomore from Willmar, Minnesota, claimed the Summit League Women’s Athlete of the Year award for the second season in a row. She repeated as Summit League individual champion in October and also was the league’s top individual finisher at the NCAA Midwest Regional in early November. Hansen was a three-time Summit League Athlete of the Week during the fall campaign.
A senior from Worthing, Peters paced a balanced Jackrabbit men’s squad by winning the individual conference championship. With his victory, he earned all-Summit League honors for the fifth time, including first-team recognition for the fourth time. Peters also was honored as the Summit League Male Athlete of the Month for October.
DeHaven led the Jackrabbit men to a record sixth consecutive league title during the 2021 season, as well as the second team championship in a row by the women’s squd. He has been honored as Summit League Cross Country Coach of the Year a combined 13 times - 10 times with the men and three times for the women.
Selections were determined by a vote among the Summit League’s head cross country coaches.
