SDSU men’s golf team picked fifth in preseason poll

SIOUX FALLS – After posting four top-15 finishes this fall, the South Dakota State men’s golf team was picked fifth in the Summit League preseason poll by the league’s head coaches and released Friday by the league office.

The Jackrabbits received 39 points. They were also picked fifth in last year’s preseason poll.

South Dakota was picked first, Denver second, Oral Roberts third and North Dakota State fourth. Purdue Fort Wayne and Omaha were sixth followed by Western Illinois and North Dakota.

Senior Jared Nicolls was named a Golfer to Watch after leading the Jackrabbits with a 73.75 stroke average this fall. His best finish came in the season-opening Badger Invitational, tying for 27th. Nicolls has a pair of under par rounds, including a team-best 69 in the final round of the Ram Masters Invitational on Sept. 18.

Junior Jacob Otta turned in the best fall of his career, finishing with a 74.58 stroke average. He tied for 16th at The Jackrabbit on Oct. 1, shooting a 219.

The Jacks finished the fall season with a 299.67 scoring average. Their best outing was at The Jackrabbit, finishing seventh.

The 2019 Summit League Men’s Golf Championship is April 28-30 at the Sand Creek Station Golf Club in Newton, Kan. The team champion earns the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Men’s Golf Tournament.

The SDSU men’s golf team opens its spring season at the Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Southern Utah in St. George, Utah, on Feb. 11-12.
