PeeWee A Rangers win state title; PeeWee C, 14U finish 4th

PEEWEE A

The top-seeded PeeWee A Rangers went 3-0 at the PeeWee A State Tournament in Aberdeen to bring home the state championship.

Brookings opened with a 13-2 win on Friday over Huron; edged Rushmore, 3-2, in Saturday’s semifinal; and then, dispatched Sioux Falls, 7-3, on Sunday in the title tilt.

Championship Game

• Brookings 7, Sioux Falls 3

The Rangers dominated the third-seeded Flyers, outshooting them 33-7, as Egan Jensen collected four saves for the win in goal.

Brookings built a 2-0 lead after a period as Riley Linstad netted an early goal off assists from Jacob Kahle and Cooper Deatherage. Kahle lit the lamp off Jacob Peterson’s setup to make it 2-0.

After the Flyers tied the game with two goals in the second period, Owen Schneider found the back of the net off another Peterson helper to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead heading into the third.

Peterson earned a hat trick with three goals in the final frame – assisted by Schneider on the first; helped by Schneider and Luke Honkomp on the second; and the third unassisted – while Schneider tallied an unassisted goal as Brookings pulled away to win the championship by a 7-3 margin.

Semifinal Game

• Brookings 3, Rushmore 2

The Rangers led 2-0 after a period as Peterson lit the lamp twice – the first unassisted and the second set up by Schneider and Honkomp.

After a scoreless second period, the Thunder cut the lead in half with a short-handed goal, but Honkomp scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal three minutes later off assists from Peterson and Linstad.

Rushmore netted a late power-play goal for the final margin.

Jensen notched 11 saves as Brookings held a 17-11 edge in shots.

Quarterfinal Game

• Brookings 13, Huron 2

The Rangers scored five goals in the first; added five in the second; and then, tacked on three more in the third to cruise to an opening-round win over the All Stars.

Schneider tallied two unassisted goals before Honkomp lit the lamp off assists from Peterson and Schneider. Linstad then scored twice – assisted by Chase Karch on the first and Deatherage and Jacob Law on the second – for 5-2 lead after one.

Cole Schaller opened the second-period scoring off a Kahle setup before Kahle lit the lamp off a Deatherage helper. Linstad notched his hat trick goal with the assist going to Deatherage to make it 8-2.

Honkomp scored off assists from Schneider and Kahle before Deatherage closed out the second-period scoring as Kahle picked up another assist.

In the third, Peterson found the back of the net off a Schneider setup; Honkomp scored off another Schneider assist; and then, Deatherage found the back of the net as Kahle and Linstad helped.

After giving up two goals on three shots in the first period, the Ranger defense didn’t allow another shot as Jensen earned the win in goal with one save while Brooking fired 36 shots in the game.

PEEWEE B

The PeeWee B Rangers placed seventh at the PeeWee B State Tournament held in Sioux Center over the weekend.

Brookings dropped its opener, 8-1, to top-seeded Yankton; lost 5-3 to Brandon Valley in the consolation round; but bounced back with a 4-0 shutout of Sioux Falls Orange in the seventh-place game as Brayden Bingham earned his first shutout win of the season.

Seventh-Place Game

• Brookings 4, Sioux Falls (2) 0

After a scoreless first period, Jackson Heller lit the lamp off an assist from Talon Hyde before Waylon Carroll found the back of the net as Ashton Voss set up the goal.

Leading 2-0 through two, the Rangers added a pair of insurance goals in the third when Hyde netted the puck off assists from Braden Dobesh and Heller, and then, Tre Christopherson scored off another Hyde helper.

Bingham finished with 16 saves as Brookings outshot Orange, 37-16.

Consolation Game

• Brandon Valley 5, Brookings 3

Trailing 1-0 after a period, Christopherson tied the game off a Heller helper before Hyde gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead with Isaak Earley picking up the assist. The Ice Cats evened the game at 2-2 heading into the third with a late power-play goal.

After Brandon scored to take the lead midway through the third, Hyde tallied an unassisted goal to level it at 3-3, but the Ice Cats notched two late goals for the final margin.

Bingham finished with 18 saves as the Rangers held a 24-23 edge in shots.

Quarterfinal Game

• Yankton 8, Brookings 1

The Rangers trailed 2-0 in the second period when Gerrit Kass lit the lamp off a Carroll assist to cut the lead in half, but Yankton tallied two more goals in the second before tacking on four in the third for the final margin.

The Miracle outshot Brookings, 31-13, as Bingham collected 23 saves in the loss.

PEEWEE C

The seventh-seeded PeeWee C Rangers finished fourth at the PeeWee C State Tournament in Yankton over the weekend as they knocked off second-seeded Yankton, 3-2, in overtime in the first round, before falling to third-seeded Oahe, 3-2, in overtime in Saturday’s semifinal. Brookings closed its season with a 10-2 loss to fourth-seeded Mitchell in Sunday’s third-place game.

Quarterfinal Game

• Brookings 3, Yanton 2 (OT)

After a scoreless first period, the Miracle scored twice in the second to lead 2-0 heading into the final frame.

Andrew Hahn tallied an unassisted goal midway through the period to cut the deficit in half before Derrick Eischens tied the game with 4 seconds to play off a Cameron Rolli assist to force overtime.

In the overtime period, Rolli scored the game-winning goal off assists from Rhys Heiberger and Eischens to put the Rangers into the semifinals.

Yankton held a 31-11 edge in shots as Ryder Anderson earned the win in goal with 29 saves.

Semifinal Game

• Oahe 3, Brookings 2 (OT)

The Rangers got on the scoreboard first as Rolli tallied an unassisted, power-play goal, but the Capitals responded a minute later with a goal that sent the game into the second period tied at 1-1.

After Oahe scored a short-handed goal to take the lead, Haidin Heesch tied the game off a Heiberger helper to make it 2-2 through two.

After a scoreless third period, the Capitals netted the game winner midway through OT to advance to the championship.

The Capitals outshot Brookings, 42-11, as Anderson collected 39 saves in the overtime loss.

Third-Place Game

• Mitchell 10, Brookings 2

Eischens’ goal 5 minutes into the game off a Keygan Peterson assist gave the Rangers the early lead, but the Marlins tied it up 4 minutes later.

Less than a minute later, Haidin Heesch netted an unassisted goal before Mitchell scored late in the period to send it into the second tied at 2-2.

The Marlins scored eight unanswered goals to earn the win – three in the second and five in the third – as they held a 34-11 advantage in shots, with Anderson stopping 24 Mitchell shots in the loss.

14U GIRLS

The Rangers finished fourth in the 14U State Tournament held in Huron over the weekend. Brookings opened play with a 4-2 win over Aberdeen on Friday, but then fell, 6-2, to Sioux Falls in Saturday’s semifinal. In the third-place game, the Rangers dropped an 8-2 decision to the host All Stars.

Quarterfinal Game

• Brookings 4, Aberdeen 2

Despite being outshot, 35-12, the Rangers didn’t allow a goal until the third period after they had already built a 4-0 advantage.

Graciana Peterson scored off a Jayda Geraets assist for a 1-0 lead after one.

In the second period, Jadyn Kuehl tallied an unassisted goal for a 2-0 edge heading into the final frame.

Kuehl notched another unassisted goal early in the third before Ella Park lit the lamp 37 seconds later off assists from Taylor Hokenson and Julissa Peterson for the 4-0 lead.

Aberdeen cut the margin in half with back-to-back goals as Heidi Merriman collected 33 saves for the win in goal.

Semifinal Game

• Sioux Falls 6, Brookings 2

The Flyers scored twice in the first before Ella Park lit the lamp to make it 2-1 after a period.

Sioux Falls pushed its lead to 3-1 with the lone second-period goal.

The Flyers went up 4-1 less than 4 minutes into the third; and then, Maggie Dunbar made it a two-goal game 2 minutes later off a Kuehl assist. But Sioux Falls tacked on two more for the final margin.

Merriman stopped 22 of the 28 shots she faced as the Flyers held a 28-9 edge in shots.

Third-Place Game 

• Huron 8, Brookings 2

The All Stars scored three first-period goals before Dunbar lit the lamp off a Payton Triplett assist to open the second-period scoring.

Huron matched that goal for a 4-1 lead heading into the third.

In the third, the All Stars added four more goals before Hokenson scored off assists from Dunbar and Triplett.

Rorii Quam had 32 saves in the loss as Huron outshot the Rangers, 40-8.

JUNIOR VARSITY BOYS

The JV Rangers posted a 2-1 SDAHA record over the weekend with wins over Brandon Valley (8-0) and Aberdeen (8-2), before falling to league-leading Sioux Falls (1), 6-0.

Brookings is tied with Mitchell for second in the league standings with 26 points, courtesy of a 13-5 mark.

• Brookings 8, Brandon Valley 0

The Rangers dominated play as they outshot the Ice Cats, 51-16, with Kaden Gutormson earning the shutout win in goal with 16 saves.

Brookings netted three first-period goals; added two in the second; and then, tacked on three in the third.

Kane Kurtenbach tallied back-to-back goals to open the scoring before Nick Jonas lit the lamp for the 3-0 lead after one. Noah Ronning and Jonas set up Kurtenbach’s first goal before Jackson Law and Carter Merritt picked up the helpers on the second. Merritt chalked up another assist on Jonas’ goal.

In the second, Merritt netted the puck on an unassisted goal before Noah Drew found the back of the net off a Kurtenbach assist.

Jonas pushed the lead to six goals early in the third period off another Merritt helper before Trevor Berreth and Kurtenbach scored unassisted goals for the final margin.

• Brookings 8, Aberdeen 2

The Rangers built a four-goal lead into the second period before Aberdeen finally got on the scoreboard. Brookings then tacked on four more goals and the Cougars provided for the final score with their second goal midway through the third period.

Merritt picked up a hat trick in the first period with three goals as Berreth earned a playmaker with assists on each.

Two minutes into the second, Kurtenbach scored off assists from Law and Kobe Hai for the 4-0 lead. After Aberdeen netted the puck, Berreth tallied an unassisted power-play goal and Kurtenbach lit the lamp again off another Berreth helper.

Noah Ronning opened the third-period scoring off a Kurtenbach helper less than a minute into play; Luc Bouchard tallied an unassisted goal 46 seconds later; and then, the Cougars scored their second goal with 7:02 to play.

The Rangers outshot Aberdeen, 30-10, as Gutormson picked up his second win of the weekend in goal with eight saves.

• Sioux Falls (1) 6, Brookings 0

The Flyers scored two goals in each period as they held a 31-16 edge in shots.

Gutormson finished with 25 saves in the loss.

BANTAM A

The Bantam A Rangers closed regular-season SDAHA play with three wins to secure the top seed for this weekend’s Bantam A State Tournament in Mitchell. The Bantams open against eighth-seeded Oahe at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Brookings finished regular-season play with 37 points (18-1-0-1) to edge Sioux Falls (2) for the top spot as the Flyers finished with an 18-2 mark for 36 points.

The Rangers shut out Watertown, 10-0; downed Sioux Center, 13-5; and then, beat Sioux Falls (1), 6-3.

• Brookings 10, Watertown 0

The Rangers scored five goals in the first period; added two in the second; and then, tacked on three in the third as they limited Watertown to three shots while firing 34 of their own with Kade Brecher earning the shutout win in goal with three stops.

Breck Hirrschoff sandwiched a pair of unassisted goals around a Trenton Pederson tally for a 3-0 lead inside of the first seven minutes of play. Isaac Schulte set up Pederson’s goal; and then, Schulte lit the lamp off assists from Zach Struck and Hirrschoff. Struck sent the Rangers into the first intermission up five goals off a Schulte setup.

Hirrschoff earned his hat trick midway through the second period off assists by Joseph Wu and Brecher before Wu scored off a Struck setup.

In the third, Struck scored back-to-back goals ¬– the first on a power play – for a hat trick as Hirrschoff and Pederson assisted on the first and Miles Merhib and Schulte helped on the second. Hirrschoff closed out the scoring with his fourth goal as Struck picked up another assist for a playmaker.

• Brookings 13, Sioux Center 5

After building a 3-1 lead after a period, the Rangers found the back of the net eight times in the second for an 11-3 advantage to pretty much put the game away.

After the Tornadoes lit the lamp just nine seconds into the game, Brookings scored three unanswered goals as Hirrschoff sandwiched a pair of goals – the first unassisted; the second set up by Struck – around a Pederson unassisted tally.

In the second, Sioux Center cut the lead to 3-2, but Brody Powers answered six seconds later with an unassisted goal to push the margin back to two.

Hirrschoff tallied his hat trick goal nine seconds later off assists from Powers and Merhib before the Tornadoes lit the lamp again to make it 5-3.

Schulte’s tally a minute later sparked a six-goal. Struck set up that goal and then scored the next as Wu and Hirrschoff helped.

Pederson scored back-to-back unassisted goals before Struck notched his second goal off assists from Merhib and Hirrschoff.

Hirrschoff added another goal to send the Rangers into the final frame up eight goals.

Sioux Center scored twice early in the third to make it 11-5 before Powers and Struck both scored off assists by Hirrschoff for the final margin.

Brecher stopped 15 of Sioux Center’s 20 shots for the win as the Rangers fired 37 shots in the game.

• Brookings 6, Sioux Falls (1) 3

The Rangers got off to a good start with three first-period goals for a 3-0 lead after one; led 5-3 through two; and then, tacked on a third-period goal for the final.

Powers scored less than a minute in on an unassisted tally before Hirrschoff converted on a power-play opportunity with another unassisted tally. Struck then scored off assists from Hirrschoff and Powers.

Less than two minutes into the second period, the Flyers notched their first goal, but the Rangers answered with back-to-back, unassisted power-play goals from Hirrschoff and Powers to make it 5-1.

Sioux Falls scored two late goals, but never lit the lamp again as Struck added an insurance goal in the third off a Pederson assist.

Brecher finished with 30 saves in the win as the Flyers held a 33-32 advantage in shots.

BANTAM B

The Bantam B Rangers closed their SDAHA regular season with a pair of one-goal home losses to the top two teams in the state. On Saturday at Larson Ice Center, Brookings lost, 1-0, to Sioux Falls (2); and then, dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Sioux Falls (1) on Sunday.

The Rangers, seeded sixth, take on No. 3 Mitchell at 6:30 p.m. on Friday in Sioux Falls to open state tournament play.

• Sioux Falls (2) 1, Brookings 0

The Flyers tallied the only goal of the game less than 3 minutes into play.

Sioux Falls held a 34-13 edge in shots as Addison Ronning finished with 33 saves in the loss.

 Sioux Falls (1) 2, Brookings 1, OT

The Rangers led 1-0 after a period on Gage Peterson’s unassisted tally 5 1/2 minutes into play.

The Flyers tied the game less than 3 minutes into the second; and then, after a scoreless third, Sioux Falls scored 7 minutes into overtime to pick up the win.

Ronning collected 38 saves as the Flyers outshot Brookings, 40-18.
