JV boys take sixth in Eden Prairie; JV girls win three league games

JUNIOR VARSITY BOYS

The junior varsity Rangers went 1-2 in the Eden Prairie Junior Gold B Tournament to place sixth as they dropped their first game, 5-1, to host Eden Prairie on Friday; bounced back with a 2-1 overtime win over Duluth on Saturday; and then fell, 3-2, on Sunday to Stillwater.

  • Eden Prairie 5, Rangers 1

After a scoreless first period, the host team took a 3-0 lead through two on the way to the 5-1 win as Jordan Svobodny tallied the lone Ranger goal in the third off an assist from Noah Drew as Philip Kuechenmeister finished with 15 saves in goal.

  • Rangers 2, Duluth 1, OT

Duluth led 1-0 through one before Peyton Stensgaard lit the lamp in the second period off a setup from Jack McCarty.

In overtime, Stensgaard netted the puck with 11 seconds to play as McCarty picked up the assist while Kuechenmeister stopped 25 shots.

  • Stillwater 3, Rangers 2

Evan Becher scored with 1:13 to play in the first period off assists from Sean Kurban and Svobodny as the scored was tied at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.

Stillwater scored the only goal of the second period to take a 2-1 lead and then tacked on one in the third, which was enough for the win as Sajen Perry scored for the Rangers off a Stensgaard setup to get within a goal.

JUNIOR VARSITY GIRLS

The junior varsity Rangers won three league games over the weekend – 11-0 over Watertown; 8-0 over Sioux Center; and 8-0 over Huron – to take the top spot in the South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association standings with 18 points with a 9-0 record.

  • Rangers 11, Watertown 0

Brookings scored four goals in each of the first two periods before tacking on three in the third as Marina Gerstner stopped all six shots she faced for the shutout win in goal.

Montana Myer opened the scoring off an assist from Janaya Kuehl before Kuehl found the back of the net as McKenna Geraets and Brooklyn Roberts picked up assists. Myer scored two more goals to complete the hat trick – assisted by Addi Ramlo and Kuehl on the first and unassisted on the second.

In the second, Ramlo netted the puck as Myer and Savannah Barber earned assists and then Kuehl scored again with Myer and Barber helping. Myer made it 7-0 off a Ramlo assist before Jenna Schulte closed out the second with a goal off assists from Kuehl and Emma Rice.

Roberts opened the third with an unassisted power-play tally; Rice scored off a Ramlo assist; and then Schulte lit the lamp with an unassisted tally for the final margin.

  • Rangers 8, Sioux Center 0

Brookings scored four first-period goals; added three in the second; and tacked on an extra in the third as Jadyn Runge stopped all eight shots she faced for the shutout win in goal.

Myer sandwiched a pair of goals around a Ramlo lamp lighter as Kuehl and Schulte set up the first goal and Gerstner picked up an assist on Ramlo’s tally. Schulte sent the Rangers into the first intermission up four goals as Shaylea Peterson earned an assist.

In the second, Roberts opened the scoring off a Ramlo setup before Myer notched an unassisted goal. Ramlo found the back of the net to make it 7-0 through two as Barber earned the assist.

Geraets scored early in the third for the final margin off a Myer setup as the Rangers held a 35-8 edge in shots.

  • Rangers 8, Huron 0

Brookings scored five goals in the first and three in the third on the strength of a 63-11 advantage in shots as Runge had 11 saves in the shutout win.

Roberts, Ramlo and Geraets scored unassisted goals in the first five minutes to set the tone before Myer set up the final two goals of the period as Schulte and Geraets each lit the lamp for the 5-0 lead.

In the third, Schulte scored again off assists from Myer and Geraets, and then Gerstner added a pair of unassisted goals for the final margin.

BANTAM A

The Bantam A Rangers notched a pair of SDAHA wins over the weekend at home as they beat Huron, 7-1, on Saturday and then followed up with an 8-1 win over Mitchell on Sunday.

The Rangers, tied for second place in the league standings with Fremont with 10 points courtesy of a 5-2 record, travel to Sioux Falls on Saturday to face East before returning to Larson Ice Center on Sunday to take on Fremont in a noon matchup.

  • Rangers 8, Mitchell 1

Tristan VanDeVere scored the only goal of the first period with 4:44 to play as Kane Kurtenbach earned the assist before the Rangers tacked on five goals in the second and two more in the third for the final margin.

Jamison Honkomp scored off assists from Cole Mahlum and Max Kjelden and then VanDeVere set up Kurtenbach for the 3-0 lead. Kjelden lit the lamp off assists from Mahlum and Honkomp before Alec Rice and Kjelden each tallied unassisted goals for the 6-0 lead heading into the final period.

In the third, Kurtenbach scored again off a VanDeVere assist and then VanDeVere added an unassisted goal as the Ranger defense of Zach Weber, Cayden Jacobsma, Charlie Marshall, Ike Johnson and Rice held the Marlins to 11 shots with Carter Schulz notching 10 saves.

  • Rangers 7, Huron 1

VanDeVere scored two goals less than 30 seconds apart to get the Rangers on the board as Rice set up the first one and Johnson helped on the second. Kjelden added an unassisted tally before Honkomp found the back of the net off a Rice assist for the 4-0 lead after a period.

Kjelden tallied an unassisted goal as Brookings led 5-1 through two.

Mahlum lit the lamp with less than five minutes to play in the game off Kjelden’s assist and then Honkomp notched an unassisted goal as Brookings outshot the All Stars, 46-12, with Schulz stopping 11 Huron shots.

BANTAM B

The Bantam B Rangers dropped to fifth-place tie with Yankton in the SDAHA standings after dropping a 4-3 league game to Sioux Center on Saturday at LIC. The Rangers have four points with a 2-4 record and travel to Yankton on Sunday to face the Bucks.

  • Sioux Center 4, Rangers 3

Brookings led 1-0 after a period as Mason McKnight lit the lamp off an assist from Trevor Pederson.

Trailing 3-1 in the third, Brookings scored twice on goals by Carter Merritt (unassisted) and Nick Jonas (assisted by Kobe Hai), but the Storm tacked on a short-handed goal to complete the comeback as Kaden Gutormson finished with 30 saves in the loss.

PEEWEE B

The PeeWee B Rangers posted a 1-3 mark over the weekend at the Sioux Falls PeeWee Bronze Tournament.

  • Burnsville 12, Rangers 0

Burnsville held a 65-6 advantage in shots as Kade Brecher finished with 53 saves.

  • Rangers 4, Mitchell 3

Brookings led 1-0 after a period when Jack Merritt scored off an Eli Merhib assist and then, Jesse Roberts added an unassisted goal in the second as the Rangers still led 2-1 through two.

Joseph Wu’s unassisted goal in the third pushed the lead to 3-1 before Mitchell answered with two goals to tie the game. Roberts scored the game-winning goal with 10 seconds to play off Merritt’s setup as Brecher collected 21 saves.

  • Omaha 4, Rangers 3

The Rangers took the early lead as Merhib lit the lamp off an assist from Merritt before Omaha came back to lead 2-1 after one.

After a scoreless second, Merhib tied the score with another goal, as Merritt and Roberts set up the goal but Omaha tacked on two goals midway through the third to go up 4-2. Merritt provided for the final margin with an unassisted goal as Brecher stopped 33 of the 37 shots he faced.

  • Sioux Falls West 4, Rangers 2

Merritt scored unassisted goals in both the first and second periods, as the teams were tied 1-1 after a period before West took a 3-2 lead through two.

West added an insurance goal in the third as Brecher finished with 28 saves.

SQUIRT A

The Squirt A Rangers won two lopsided games before skating to a 2-2 tie against Watertown on Sunday at the Huron Jamboree. The Squirts beat Aberdeen, 12-0, and the host All Stars, 11-0, before drawing with the Lakers.

  • Rangers 2, Watertown 2

Jacob Kahle scored an unassisted goal in the first period and Jacob Peterson tallied one in the second as the Rangers held a 22-14 edge in shots with Addison Ronning coming up with 12 saves in the tie game.

  • Rangers 18, Huron 0

Brookings scored eight goals in the first; five in the second and five more in the third for the easy win as the Ranger defense of David Brink and Jordan Raatz helped limit the All Stars to just four shots, which Ronning stopped for the shutout win.

Peterson scored twice in the first period while Kahle, Owen Schneider, Cooper Deatherage, David Brink, Chase Karch and Luke Honkomp each tacked on one goal as Karch, Peterson, Schneider and Kahle earned assists.

The Rangers’ added five second-period goals as Schneider scored twice and Karch, Kahle and Aiden Austreim all found the back of the net.

Schneider tacked on his fourth goal of the game to open the third before Ren Jacobsen, Gage Peterson, Raatz and Kahle contributed unassisted goals for the final margin.

  • Rangers 12, Aberdeen 0

Brookings scored eight goals in the first, three in the second and one in the third to shut out the Cougars in the first game of the Huron Jamboree.

Kahle sandwiched a pair of unassisted goals around a Jacob Peterson score before Karch lit the lamp for the 4-0 lead. Jacob Peterson added another goal; Kahle found the back of the net twice; and then Raatz sent the Rangers into the first intermission up eight with another goal.

Schneider sandwiched two goals around a Honkomp tally in the second period as Jacob Peterson set up the second as Brookings pushed its lead to 11 goals.

Jacob Law tallied an unassisted goal midway through the third as the Ranger defense of Austreim and Jacobsen helped limit the Cougars to eight shots as Ronning stopped all eight for the shutout.

SQUIRT B BLUE

The Squirt B Blue Rangers posted a 3-0 record on Saturday at the Huron Jamboree with wins over the host All Stars (3-0), Mitchell (5-1) and Watertown Gold (3-2).

  • Rangers 3, Huron 0

After a scoreless first period, Jack Lee lit the lamp twice in the second – the first unassisted and the second set up by Carter Runge with 38 seconds left – to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead.

Braden Dobesh added an insurance goal in the third as Lee picked up the assist while Egan Jensen stopped all eight shots that he faced for the shutout win.

  • Rangers 5, Mitchell 1

Runge tallied an unassisted goal early in the first before Taryn Richter beat the clock with another unassisted goal with five seconds to play as Brookings led 2-0 after a period.

Jensen tacked on another unassisted goal midway through the second to match a Marlin second-period goal.

Runge scored twice in the third for the final margin as Jensen had two saves in the third period and Charles Malone stopped five of the six shots he faced over the first two periods.

  • Rangers 3, Watertown 2

Haiden Heesch found the back of the net off an assist from Lee before Riley Linstad lit the lamp with 25 seconds to play for a 2-1 lead after a period.

After the Lakers scored the only goal of the second period to tie the game, Runge netted the puck early in the third off a Linstad setup for the wining goal as Jensen finished with six saves.

SQUIRT B WHITE

The Squirt B White Rangers went 1-1-1 at the Huron Jamboree on Saturday as they skated to a 3-3 tie with the Mitchell Marlins Navy; shut out Aberdeen White, 6-0; and then dropped a 3-1 decision to Aberdeen Yellow.

  • Rangers 3, Mitchell Navy 3

After a scoreless first period, Tre Christopherson scored in the second as the Marlins led 2-1 through two.

Ashton Voss notched an unassisted goal midway through the third and Christopherson scored again off a Landon Wingate assist as Wyatt Pitsenberger was in goal in the 3-3 tie.

  • Rangers 6, Aberdeen White 0

Brookings scored five goals in the first period – all unassisted – as Christopherson lit the lamp; Voss scored two goals; Cole Schaller found the back of the net; and then Voss tacked on the final goal for the 5-0 lead.

Keygan Peterson scored in the second period for the final margin as Brayden Bingham earned the shutout in goal.

  • Aberdeen Yellow 3, Rangers 1

Aberdeen led 2-0 after a period and 3-0 through two before Christopherson scored the lone Ranger goal – unassisted – midway through the third as Bingham tended the net.
