WICHITA – The Jackrabbits split four games at the Wichita State Tournament last weekend, picking up a pair of wins over Northern Colorado while losing to Minnesota on Friday and No. 23 Wichita State on Sunday.

SDSU 1, Northern Colorado 0
Shannon Lasey pitched a complete game and went a season-high eight innings in SDSU’s 1-0 victory over Northern Colorado.

The Bears had an early opportunity in the first thanks to a lead-off single, however two groundouts and a strikeout would strand the lone Northern Colorado runner at third base. It’d be the last Bear to reach base for the next four innings.

The two sides combined for just six hits as the meeting drew out as a pitcher’s duel. The Bears got a runner on in both the sixth and seventh innings, but each time SDSU catcher Brooke Dumont caught runners stealing to avoid any threat.

South Dakota State got a double by Dumont in the fourth, a pinch-hit walk by Alivya Bollen in the sixth and a pinch-hit single by Alexa Williams in the seventh, but couldn’t plate a run as UNC starter Erin Caveness kept the Jackrabbits at bay.

Extra innings put a runner on second base to start the eighth for both teams. The Bears hit two groundouts and had a batter strike out and were unable to score. Lindsey Culver opened the bottom half of the eighth on second and with one out advanced on a wild pitch to third. After an intentional walk to Mia Jarecki, an error in the outfield off the bat of Emma Osmundson scored Culver and gave the Jacks a walk-off victory.

Lasey improved to 7-5 on the season with the complete-game shutout. She gave up three hits and didn’t allow a walk or hit by pitch in the outing. Alli Boyle added a hit to SDSU’s stat line.

Minnesota 9, SDSU 5
South Dakota State’s lineup produced a better showing but Minnesota’s was just a bit more timely in a 9-5 Golden Gopher win against the Jackrabbits.

The Jackrabbits escaped a first inning with a scoreless tie despite the Gophers loading the bases as SDSU starter Tori Kniesche completed a strikeout for the third out of the inning.

SDSU took the first lead of the contest with three runs in the top of the third. Cheyanne Masterson singled to open the inning and with two outs scored on an RBI triple by Osmundson. Rozelyn Carrillo followed with an RBI double then another RBI double by Allison Yoder extended the Jackrabbit advantage to 3-0.

The Jacks enjoyed the three-run lead for an inning before Minnesota jumped ahead for good. A five-hit, five-run bottom of the fourth for the Gophers chased Kniesche from the game and put the Gophers up 5-3. Following a scoreless fifth, Minnesota scored four more runs which included a two-run home run.

The Jackrabbits cut into the deficit in their final at-bat in the seventh. A Jarecki walk and Emma Osmundson single eventually led to runs scored on RBI groundouts by Carrillo and Yoder.

Kniesche took the loss for SDSU dropping her overall record to 9-4. Alexa threw two innings of relief for the Jacks and Lasey closed out the final out needed in the bottom of the sixth. Osmundson had a team-high three hits and Masterson recorded two. Both Carrillo and Yoder registered two RBIs.

SDSU 11, Northern Colorado 2
The Jackrabbits’ lineup erupted as Mia Jarecki, Rozelyn Carillo, Allison Yoder and Alli Boyle all recorded multiple RBIs in a 11-2 win over the Bears on Sunday afternoon.

SDSU scored a pair of runs in the second inning before Carillo delivered a solo home run in the third inning to make it a 3-0 game. Lindsey Culver delivered a RBI single to expand the lead before Alyssa Wenzel cut into the lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the third.

The Jacks took off from there as Carillo and Boyle each delivered two-run singles in the top of the fourth, Jarecki smacked an RBI double in the fifth and Yoder hit a two-run homer to break the game open.
Kniesche made the starts for the Jacks, allowing two runs over seven innings while scattering four hits, seven walks and striking out nine.

No. 23 Wichita State 4, SDSU 3
The Shockers scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to hold off the Jacks’ upset bid on Sunday afternoon.

SDSU took an early lead on a Carillo double in the top of the second but Lauren Lucas tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning. The game remained tied until a wild seventh inning where

Carillo smashed a go-ahead homer to put the Jacks up 2-1. Jarecki added to the lead with an RBI double to make it 3-1, but the Shockers began to rally against Lasey in the bottom half of the inning.

Zoe Jones made it a 3-2 game with an RBI single before Mills tied the game with another RBI single. With the bases loaded, Taylor Sedlacek delivered the walk-off single to give Wichita State the victory.

Carillo went 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and a pair of RBI for SDSU while Brooke Dumont wnet 1-for-2 and Jarecki went 1-for-4 with the RBI.

Lasey pitched 6.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) with 11 hits, two walks and six strikeouts.
