Flyers sweep Dolphins on Day 1

RAPID CITY – Second-seeded Chester Area (26-4) picked up a 25-21, 25-18, 25-17 win over Deubrook Area in the opening round of the Class B State Volleyball Tournament on Thursday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

“I thought we blocked well, and we played a ton of defense,” said Dolphin coach Rachelle DeBeer. “We just couldn’t get on the same page offensively.

“Chester played well tonight. They have some state tourney experience and they were steady tonight.

“We fought so hard to crawl back into Sets 1 and 2, that we ran out of gas in Set 3.”

Top-seeded and defending champion Northwestern (33-1), Herreid/Selby Area (30-2) and Warner (29-4) added victories on Day 1.

Dakota Alfson paced the Flyers with 16 kills, a service ace, 1 1/2 blocks and seven digs.

Jadon Wages tallied eight kills, a block and 10 digs. Makenna Larson chipped in with seven kills and 12 digs.

Hailey Ewoldt paced the offense with 35 set assists and Hanna Reiff led the defense with 22 digs.

The Dolphins’ Shaylee DeBeer had a 14-point performance, tallying 11 kills, two blocks and an ace to go with 20 digs and 13 digs.

Ashley Vandermeer contributed eight kills and 11 digs. Cortney Bauman tallied six kills, an ace and a match-high 28 digs.

Shelby Andrews had five kills and 1 1/2 blocks. Sarah Urevig added 11 set assists.

The Dolphins (25-8), making their second state tournament appearance all-time – 1998 champions – take on Burke/South Central in a consolation semifinal today at 2:45 p.m.

 Northwestern 3, Faith 0

The Wildcats cruised to a 25-12, 25-17, 25-14 win.

Caitlyn Fischbach had 14 kills and Evy Peterson added 10 to go with a block assist.

Riley Grandpre contributed eight kills and two blocks (one solo).

Madalyn Groft finished with 35 set assists, five kills, two aces and 15 digs. Peyton Groft chipped in with 10 digs and a pair of aces.

For the Longhorns (21-12), Mikenzy Miller had nine kills.

 Herreid/Selby Area 3, Hanson 1

The fifth-seeded Wolverines pulled out a 25-14, 18-25, 25-21, 25-17 victory.

Charlie Tisdall racked up 24 kills, two aces and 20 digs.

Madalyn Schumacher and Rachel Fiedler both totaled 15.5 points – the former had 11 kills, two aces and 2 1/2 blocks (two solo) while the latter finished with 10 kills, five aces and a block assist to go with 17 digs.

Cassie Anderson had 39 set assists and 17 digs.

For the Beaverettes (27-3), Jada Campbell totaled 13 kills and three solo blocks. Brookelyn Weber, who had two aces, a block assist and 15 digs, and Brookelyn Slaba both finished with 10 kills. Heather Kayser had 38 set assists and 22 digs.

 Warner 3, Burke/South Central 0

The Monarchs rolled, winning 25-13, 25-7, 25-19.

Laurie Rogers had 13 kills and a solo block. Peyton Ellingson also racked up 14 points with 12 kills and two blocks (one solo).

Ashley Fischbach tallied seven kills, two aces and a solo block. Sydney Leidholt contributed eight kills, an ace and 12 digs.

Morgan Rozell dished out 36 set assists and Laura Ochsner came up with 20 digs.

Taylee Indahl had eight kills for the Cougars (28-6).
