CASTLEWOOD – Brookings jumped on the Ravens with a pair of first-inning runs and Kyle Krogman and Mike Holen combined to hold the home team to just two hits as the Cubs cruised to an 8-0 win on Wednesday.
Krogman led off the game with a base hit before Jeff Fish followed up with another single. Both runners moved up on Sam McMacken’s ground out and then JaColby Anderson stroked a two-RBI single to give Brookings a 2-0 lead after half an inning.
The Cubs added a run in the fourth when Mike Graybill drew a walk and Ty Schneider’s base hits put runners on the corners. Mark Sontag’s groundout plated Graybill for a 3-0 edge.
In the seventh, Sontag’s single started a four-run rally. Krogman walked and then McMacken hit a one-out three-run homer to make it 6-0. But the Cubs weren’t finished as Anderson singled, stole second and went to third on Austin Koenig’s sacrifice fly to right field. Jared Tschetter plated Anderson with another base hit and Brookings led 7-0 through 6 1/2.
Brookings tacked on a run in the eighth when Schneider reached on an error, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and moved to third on a ground out. Schneider scored when the Raven defense committed an error on Krogman’s ground ball as the Cubs went up 8-0.
The game ended in the top of the ninth with two runners on when the lights went out.
Krogman gave up two hits – both by Carter Roach, one of which was a double – and walked five, with six strikeouts in seven innings of work to earn the win. Holen faced just three batters in the eighth – getting two groundouts and a flyout.
Brody Ries gave up seven earned runs on 11 hits and three walks with one strikeout over seven frames to suffer the loss. Corey Roach allowed an unearned run on one hit and a walk with one strikeout in an inning of relief.
Next up for the Cubs is a matchup with the Cormorants tonight in Volga.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
