BROOKINGS – Nearly 2,800 student-athletes will embark on Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls starting today and continuing through Saturday for the running of the 116th SDHSAA Track & Field Championships.

Combined state track meets begin today

BROOKINGS – Nearly 2,800 student-athletes will embark on Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls starting today and continuing through Saturday for the running of the 116th SDHSAA Track & Field Championships.

In Class B a total of 955 athletes, 469 girls and 486 boys, will take part in the state meet. Class A has 953 total participants, 459 girls and 494 boys.

A total of 870 Class AA participants, 424 girls and 446 boys, will be competing.

The 2022 meet will be held as part of a new three-day format at one site.

In Class AA the defending boys’ champion Sioux Falls Lincoln will be looking for their sixth consecutive championship.

The Colman-Egan girls return to the state meet looking to repeat as state champions after winning the title in 2021.

Class AA

Brandon Valley and O’Gorman tied for the title in 2021 while Sioux Falls Lincoln is the five-time defending boys champion.

Brookings 

Girls

Brookings’ Maddix Archer is the lone Bobcat participating in the 100 meter dash. Her top time of the season, 12.54 seconds, ranks her ninth among participants. Archer will also compete in the 200 meter dash after a qualifying time of 25.89 seconds to rank fifth entering state.

In the 400 meter dash the Bobcats’ Lily Murray enters with the 14th-fastest time of 1:02.24.

Tessa Nelson will compete in the 800 meter run after a qualifying time of 2:26.38 with ranks 21st. Nelson will also run the 1600 meter race after recording a qualifying time of 5:23.99 that puts her in 11th entering state.

A trio of Bobcats will run the 3200 meter race. Addie Smetana (12:35.76), Madison Kepner (12:38.37), and Jenna York (12:50.91) hold the 21st, 22nd, and 24th qualifying times prior to state.

In the 100 meter hurdles, Brookings’ Tayla Dobrenski comes into state with the sixth fastest time of 15.40 seconds, just under a quarter of a second off the top qualifying time.

Four relay teams for Brookings will be competing in the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400, and sprint medley.

In field events Brookings has two competitors. Kat Charging (36 feet, 1.50 inches) and Sydney Grendler (36 feet, 0.50 inches) enter with the ninth and 11th best marks prior to state.

Charging, along with Gracie Adamson and Abbie Dubro will compete in the discus. Charging has the fifth best qualifying toss with a mark of 118 feet, six inches, while Adamson (110 feet, nine inches, 12th) and Dubro (105 feet, nine inches, 22nd) will also throw for the Bobcats.

In the javelin toss Brookings’ Landree Wilson has the eighth longest throw with a mark of 108 feet, 10 inches. Adamson (102 feet, 10 inches, 15th) and Chargin (101 feet, six inches, 17th) will also compete.

Dobrenski represents Brookings in the high jump and her jump of five feet, two inches ranks sixth entering state.

In the long jump Wilson ranks seventh with a pre-state mark of 17 feet, three inches, while Riley Weisbeck (16 feet, 10.5 inches, 14th) will also be entered.

Boys

Three Bobcats will run in the 100 meter dash. Junior Eberline (19th, 11.24), Hunter Gray (22nd, 11.34), and Tyson Brandt (24th, 11.44) are competing.

In the 400 meter dash Brookings’ Talon Everding enters with a qualifying time of 52.44 seconds that ranks 15th, while Cole Hockett has the 22nd fastest time with a mark of 53.03 seconds.

Sam Conrad will run in both the 800 and 1600 meter races. In the 800 meter run Conrad has the 10th fastest time with a 1:59.34, while in the 1600 meter run his time of 4:27.79 ranks fifth.

Two more distance runners will represent Brookings in the 3200 meter run. Ernest Ting’s 10:19.11 ranks 18th and teammate Torry Harding is just over one second back at 10:20.14 and ranks 20th.

Brookings will also have participating teams in all five relay events.

In the shot put Magnus Nelson ranks 17th entering state with a toss of 47 feet, four inches.

The long jump will have two Bobcats competing. Gray has the third best jump with a mark of 21 feet, 10.50 inches, while Carter Johnson ranks 15th with a jump of 20 feet, 8.50 inches.

Johnson will also compete in the triple jump after recording a 43 foot, 6.25 inch jump that ranks sixth.

Class A

West Central won the title in the girls’ division last year while Sioux Falls Christian is the defending champion in the boys’ division.

Girls

Sioux Valley

Isabelle Bloker takes to the track in both the 1600 and 3200 meter races. Bloker’s time of 5:25.84 in the 1600 ranks ninth, and in the 3200 she enters with the sixth best time of 11:39.44.

Adison Renkly will participate in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. She holds the second-fastest time in the 100 meter event with a mark of 15.84 seconds and ranks 14th in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 49.94 seconds.

Sioux Valley will have teams competing in two relay events, the 4x100 and 4x800 meter relays.

In the high jump the Cossacks’ Emma Gorvin enters with a jump of four feet, 10 inches which is tied for 14th entering state.

Kamryn Schwartz’s jump of 15 feet, 11.50 inches in the long jump ranks 20th.

Schwartz will also compete in the triple jump and enters with the fourth-best mark of 34 feet, 11.50 inches. Renkly will also participate in the triple jump having posted a jump of 32 feet, 11 inches to qualify in 17th.

Deubrook Area

In the 100 meter hurdles the Dolphins’ Carley Landmark holds the 12th best time entering state, a mark of 16.74 seconds.

In the 300 meter hurdles Ellie Olsen will enter with the 11th best time of 49.83 seconds.

The Dolphins will have teams competing in the 4x200, 4x400, 4x800, and sprint medley relays.

In field events, Emma Sheffield has the 23rd best mark in the shot put with a toss of 34 feet, 10.25 inches. Sheffield also will participate in the discus with a qualifying mark of 112 feet, six inches which ranks 15th.

Akasha Gorecki’s jump of 32 feet, 7.75 inches ranks 20th entering the triple jump.

Flandreau

The Fliers’ Faith Wiese has the fifth-fastest time in the 1600 meter run with a run of 5:21.64.

Wiese, along with Josie Hamilton and Kiley Westberry, will participate in the 3200 meter run. Wiese has the third-best time of 11:23.49, Hamilton is 19th at 12:25.24, and Westberry is 23rd at 12:35.34.

Flandreau will have teams competing in the 4x200, 4x400, 4x800, and sprint medley relays.

Two Fliers will participate in the triple jump. Lizzie Pavlis enters with the seventh-best mark of 34 feet, 4.50 inches, while Sadie Iott ranks 15th with a jump of 33 feet, one inch.

Boys

Sioux Valley

A pair of Cossacks will run in the 100 meter dash. Boden Schiller holds the fifth-fastest time entering state with a mark of 11.13 seconds while Donovan Rose ranks 23rd at 11.46 seconds.

Schiller will also run in the 200 meter dash after qualifying 16th with a time of 23.44 seconds.

Sioux Valley has two representatives in the 110 meter hurdles. Rose ranks 15th with a qualifying time of 16.54 seconds while Lane Liebsch is 21st at 17.24 seconds.

The Cossacks will have teams representing them in all five relay events.

In field events Layson Lucas is the lone Cossack in the shot put with a toss of 43 feet, 6.5 inches to qualify 21st.

The high jump has one Cossack, Jakob Guthmiller, in the field. His jump of five feet, 10 inches qualified him in a tie for 14th.

Deubrook Area

Treven Grimsrud will represent the Dolphins in the 200 meter dash. His time of 22.94 seconds ranks ninth entering state. Grimsrud will also run in the 400 meter dash with the third-fastest qualifying time of 51.44 seconds.

In the 800 meter run Jaxon Quail enters 15th with a time of 2:04.74. Quail also has the 13th-best time in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:42.74.

The Dolphins will have teams in the 4x200, 4x400, 4x800, and sprint medley relays.

Jake Jorenby is the lone Dolphin field athlete to qualify for state with a jump of five feet, nine inches in the high jump, tied for 22nd.

Flandreau

Alex Anderson takes to the track in both the 100 and 200 meter dash. His time of 11.36 seconds in the 100 ranks 14th, but he enters state with the sixth-best time in the 200 meters at 22.74 seconds.

In the 300 meter hurdles Liam Streitz has a time of 42.22 seconds that ranks eighth.

The Fliers have teams in the 4x200, 4x400, 4x800, and sprint medley relays.

In the shot put Chase Reed qualified 15th with a throw of 45 feet, 6.5 inches.

Mike Tollefson will participate in the high jump after qualifying in a tie for 14th at five feet, 10 inches.

Elkton-Lake Benton

Levi Jaacks will represent the Elks in the 400 meter dash. His time of 52.48 seconds ranks 15th entering state.

In the 800 meter run Miles Harming holds the 23rd-best time with a qualifying mark of 2:08.84.

Two Elkton-Lake Benton athletes will compete in the 110 meter hurdles. After a qualifying time of 15.69 seconds Isaac Jacks holds the better of two ELB times. Teammate Blake DeVries qualified in 22nd with a time of 17.33 seconds.

Both Isaac Jaacks (41.04 seconds, third) and DeVries (43.54 seconds, 18th) will run in the 300 meter hurdles, as well.

ELB has one relay team participating and will compete in the 4x400 meter relay.

Jack Hemmen’s toss of 43 feet, 3.50 inches snuck in as the last qualifying mark for state, but his throw of 149 feet, six inches in the discus ranked second.

In the high jump Isaac Jaacks qualified with a jump of five feet, nine inches which tied for 22nd best qualifying mark.

Riley Hunter will represent ELB in the pole vault with a qualifying mark of 15th-best at 11 feet, one inch.

The Elks’ Tanner Drietz holds the 15th best mark in the triple jump with a jump of 40 feet, 9.25 inches.

Class B

Colman-Egan is looking to defend their 2021 state championship while Hanson is the defending boys champion.

Girls

Colman-Egan

The defending champion Hawks are back to defend their title having won multiple meets throughout the season.

In the 100 meter dash Daniela Lee has the second-best qualifying time of 12.26 seconds. Lee will also run in the 200 meter dash and has the best time in the state entering the meet with a time of 25.66 seconds.

In the 400 meter dash the Hawks’ Reese Luze has the only sub-minute qualifying time of 59.16 seconds. She also has the best time in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:18.11.

Mackenzie Hemmer’s 15.85 second time in the 100 meter hurdles is tops in Class B.

In the 300 meter hurdles the Hawks’ Presley Luze has the 19th best qualifying time of 51.94 seconds.

Colman-Egan will have relay teams in the 4x100 (second-best qualifying time), 4x200, (top qualifying time), 4x400 (second-best qualifying time), 4x800 (top qualifying time), and sprint medley (top qualifying time) relays.

The Hawks have two representatives in the long jump. Lanie Mousel ranked 15th with a jump of 15 feet, 7.50 inches, while Hailey Larson ranks 20th with a jump of 15 feet, 3.75 inches.

Larsen, along with Hemmer, will compete in the triple jump. Hemmer has the top distance in Class B with a mark of 36 feet, one inch, while Larson ranks seventh at 33 feet, 2.5 inches.

Arlington

In the 100 meter dash the Cardinals’ Chloe Raw ranks tied for 15th with a time of 13.34 seconds. She also will run in the 200 meter dash with a mark of 27.24 seconds that ranks ninth.

In the 1600 meter run Kaelyn Ulschmid has the 18th-best time of 5:48.59 seconds. Ulschmid will also run the 3200 meter event with a time of 12:32.32 that ranks eighth.

Hadley Carlson will participate in both the 100 meter and 300 meter hurdles. In the 100 meter event Carlson has the eighth-best qualifying mark of 16.50 seconds, while in the 300 meters her time of 48.74 ranks fourth.

Arlington will have teams in the 4x200, 4x400, 4x800, and sprint medley relays.

In the high jump Carlson will enter in a tie with the second-best mark of five feet, three inches, while Harley Johnson’s jump of four feet, 10 inches ranks 16th.

Boys

Colman-Egan

The Hawks have two reps in the 100 meter dash. Christopher Lee’s time of 11.52 seconds ranks 15th, while Easton Williamson is just four-hundredths back at 11.56 and ranks 22nd.

Lee will also run in the 200 meter dash with the last qualifying time of 23.94 seconds.

Colman-Egan’s 4x100 and 4x200 meter relay teams will also be entered in those respective events.

In the shot put the Hawks’ Kelby Voelker ranks 22nd entering state with a throw of 44 feet, eight inches.

Jack Mousel has the 17th-best height in the high jump at five feet, nine inches.

In the long jump Colman-Egan’s Hayden Pearson has a qualifying distance of 19 feet, 8.5 inches that ranks 17th.

Arlington

The Cardinals’ Evan Fonseca will get a chance to run in the 1600 meter event after qualifying 21st with a time of 4:54.84. He also has a 3200 meter qualifying time of 10:58.33 that ranks 14th.

Arlington’s 4x800 meter team is the only Cardinals’ relay team to qualify, sneaking in to the 24th and final qualifying spot.

Britt Carlson has the seventh-best pole vault in Class B with a mark of 11 feet, six inches.

Estelline/Hendricks

Joseph McAninch’s run of 54.62 seconds secured the final qualifying spot in the 400 meter dash, and that along with the Redhawks’ 4x800 meter relay team are the only track events featuring athletes from Estelline/Hendricks.

In field events Jon Nefzger ranks sixth in shot put with a toss of an even 50 feet. Nefzger will also compete in the discus with the fifth-best mark of 144 feet, three inches.

In the high jump Braxton Saathoff’s jump of five feet, eight inches ranks in a tie for 21st. Saathoff will also participate in the triple jump after qualifying 23rd with a mark of 38 feet, 6.25 inches.

Oldham-Ramona/Rutland

The Raiders’ have a representative in the 100 meter dash in the form of Will Matson who qualified 21st with a time of 11.55 seconds.

Matson will also run the 200 meter dash for ORR after his time of 23.57 ranked 15th.

In the 400 meter dash the Raiders’ Isaac Trygstad posted a time of 53.52 seconds that ranked 14th.

The Raiders’ sprint medley team will participate in the only relay event that ORR qualified for.

In the discus throw Trygstad’s toss of 130 feet, nine inches ranks 20th.

Matson also qualified in the high jump with a mark of five feet, nine inches that ranks 17th.
