Bombers Black blast Huron to qualify for state

ABERDEEN – The Bombers Black racked up 22 hits to beat Huron 20-10 in six innings and qualify for state during the 14U North Region Baseball Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Fossum Field.

Brookings (32-6), which received a first-round bye Wednesday, takes on Mitchell in the championship game today at 1:30 p.m. The winner earns the region’s top seed in the state tourney, while the loser plays another game at 4 p.m. to determine if it’s the No. 2 or 3 seed.

The Bombers Black led 4-2 after an inning, before Huron used two runs in the second and one in the top of the third to move ahead 5-4.

Brookings took the lead for good with a two-spot in the bottom of the third and then put up six runs in the fourth to make it 12-5. Huron rallied with five runs in the top of the fifth, cutting the deficit to 12-10; however, Brookings responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and five more in the sixth to end things early.

Brookings went 22-for-36 as a team – a .611 batting average – while pushing its winning streak to eight. All nine players in the lineup had at least one hit, with eight collecting multiple hits.

No. 9 hitter Payton Theodosopoulos had a big game, going 3-for-3 with a walk and five RBIs.

Caden Krogman went 4-for-4 and scored four runs.

Trey Svennes finished 3-for-5 with a double and four RBIs. Lincoln Hardin singled twice and doubled in five at-bats, driving in one run.

Jake Ammann and Ashton Witte both doubled, singled and drove in a pair. Talon Richter and Sam Hardin added two hits, one RBI and three runs apiece. Josh Devine contributed one hit and two RBIs.

Ammann picked up the win on the mound after giving up five runs on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts in three innings.

Krogman allowed five runs on five hits with a strikeout and a walk over the next two frames.

Devine tossed a scoreless fifth, allowing one hit and striking out a batter.

Five of Huron’s 12 hits were doubles. Its Nos. 1-4 hitters combined to go 9-for-15 with six RBIs.
