YANKTON – The Brookings girls’ basketball team picked up its first victory of the season Tuesday night. The Bobcats topped Yankton 51-29 on the road.
Brookings got to work early and outscored Yankton 19-9. They hung onto that lead in the second quarter and took a 26-15 lead into halftime.
The Bobcats really broke the game open in the third quarter when they outscored the Gazelles 15-5 to give them a 21-point lead heading into the final quarter. Yankton kept up with Brookings in the fourth, but it was too little too late and the Bobcats won their first game of the year.
Landree Wilson led the Bobcats with 21 points. Allie Clark scored nine points and Ainsley Shelsta had eight. Claire Burns had six points and Haley Sampson had four.
Brookings shot 57% from the field and were 3-for-7 on 3-pointers. The Bobcats were 4-for-6 from the free throw line.
Macy Drotzman led Yankton with six points. Claire Tereshinksi and Kate Beeman each had five points. Molly Savey and Jordynn Salvatori each had four points.
The Gazelles shot 16% from the field and were 1-for-16 from three. They were 7-for-13 from the free throw line.
Brookings is now 1-9 and will take on Mitchell at the Corn Palace Friday at 7 p.m.
