BROOKINGS – The state on Thursday reported 615 new COVID-19 cases and six new deaths in South Dakota.

Twenty-eight of the new cases have been reported in Brookings County.

615 new COVID-19 cases, six new deaths reported in South Dakota

BROOKINGS – The state on Thursday reported 615 new COVID-19 cases and six new deaths in South Dakota. 

Twenty-eight of the new cases have been reported in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases have risen to 5,417 total cases (23 new confirmed and five new probable): 5,189 of those people have recovered (10 new) with 187 active cases (up by 18) and 41 deaths (no change). A total of 163 people in the county have been hospitalized at some point (no change), the state reported. 

The Brookings hospital has three COVID-19 occupied hospital beds, according to the South Dakota Department of Health website. The county is in the “high” community spread category. 

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 167,759 (472 new confirmed and 143 new probable) as of midday Thursday, according to the SDDOH. 

Of the statewide cases, 7,416 are classified as active (up by 194 from Wednesday). As of Thursday, 157,988 people have recovered (415 new), 8,490 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (22 new), 248 people are currently hospitalized (down by one) for transmission-based precautions, and 2,355 people with COVID have died (six new).

The new deaths, three women and three men, are being reported in Jerauld, Lawrence, Pennington (3) and Todd counties. The age ranges of the deceased are one 40-49 years, one 50-59 years, one 60-69 years, one 70-79 years and two 80 years or older.

The SDDOH website reported midday Thursday that 1,010,945 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to 479,660 people in South Dakota, as reported to the S.D. Immunization Information System. 

In Brookings County, 39,731 vaccine doses have been administered to 18,910 people, the SDDOH website reports.

The SDDOH reports 64.6% of the state population age 5 and older has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine from the state or federal allocation, 53.7% have completed their vaccination series, and 15.7% have received a booster dose.
