Brookings Cubs end season with loss at state tournament

BRANDON The Brookings Cubs season came to a close on Saturday as the Cubs fell to the Yankton Lakers 5-3 in the Class A State Amateur Baseball Tournament.

Brookings beat the Lakers 8-6 in the first weekend of the state tournament on Aug. 8, but then lost to Renner 2-0 on Aug. 9. On Friday, the Cubs beat Aberdeen 7-3 to stay alive before losing to Yankton and being eliminated from the tournament.

The Cubs finished the season with a record of 15-8. Harrisburg topped Renner 4-3 in the Class A championship game. It was the first state title for Harrisburg and the Woodies finished the season with a record of 21-1.

Friday

Brookings 7, Aberdeen 3

Brookings trailed 3-0 after two innings but then outscored Aberdeen 7-0 the rest of the way.

Aberdeen took the lead in the bottom of the first. Casey Vining hit a two-out double and then came home on a single from Joshue Steinwandt to make it 1-0.

They then extended the lead in the bottom of the second. Colton Cox reached on a dropped third strike and J Smith walked with two outs to put two runners on. Michael Babcock then came to the plate and he hit both runners home with a double to make it 3-0.

Brookings did not get on the scoreboard until the top of the sixth. Rhett Zelinsky led off the inning and hit one over the center field fence to make it 3-1.

The Cubs then took the lead in the top of the seventh. Noah Buss hit a solo homer with one out to cut the lead to 3-2. Justin Cofell and Isaac Bonner then hit back-to-back singles. Chase McDaniel hit Cofell home with a two-out single to tie the game. Arlen Peters came to the plate next and hit one over the left field fence to put Brookings up 6-3 heading into the final two innings.

Brookings got an insurance run in the top of the eighth as Lincoln Vasgaard hit a solo shot to left field to make it 7-3.

Aberdeen went down one-two-three in the bottom of the eighth. Easton Millar drew a lead-off walk in the bottom of the ninth but then Kelly Coates grounded into a double play. Logan Anderson then forced Jaiden Smith into a ground out to the second baseman to end the game.

Brookings had 11 hits in the victory. Peters was 1-for-3 with three RBIs and McDaniel was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Vasgaard and Buss were each 1-for-4 with an rBI and Zelinsky was 1-for-5 with an RBI. Cofell was 2-for-4 and Bonner was 2-for-5.

Jake Ammann got the start on the mound for the Cubs and pitched four innings. He gave up three earned runs on five hits and had five strikeouts and two walks. Anderson pitched the final five innings and gave up no runs and two hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

Saturday

Yankton 5, Brookings 3

Yankton scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to take the lead and held off Brookings in the bottom of the ninth.

The Cubs scored two runs in the bottom of the third to break a 0-0 tie. Buss hit a lead-off home run to right field and Cofell followed with a homer to left to make it 2-0.

Yankton cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth. Josh Sheldon walked to lead off the inning and then Will Rauch walked with one out to put two runners on. Sheldon scored on a two-out single from Lucas Kampshoff to make it 2-1.

Kampshoff and Shugo Kondo each walked to begin the top of the eighth and Waylon McKnight followed with a single to load the bases up with no outs. Kampshoff and Kondo each scored on wild pitches to give Yankton the lead. Another run came home on a wild pitch and then Gullickson came home on a Beck Ryken ground out to make it 5-2.

Brookings went down one-two-three in the bottom of the eighth. Peters hit a lead-off triple in the bottom of the ninth and then scored on a Parker Winghart sacrifice fly to make it 5-3. Myles Rees struck out for the second out of the inning and Anderson gave the Cubs some life with a two-out single. However, Buss then flew out to center field and the Cubs season came to an end.

The Cubs had eight hits in the defeat. Winghart and Cofell were each 1-for-3 with an RBI and Buss was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Zelinsky, McDaniel and Peters were all 1-for-4 and Anderson was 1-for-1.

Zach Shastay pitched the first six innings and gave up one earned run on three hits with nine strikeouts and four walks. Vasgaard pitched an inning and gave up four earned runs on two hits with no strikeouts and two walks. Anderson pitched the final two innings and gave up no runs or hits with one strikeout and two walks.
