Bombers Gray splits doubleheader with Pierre at Bob Shelden

BROOKINGS The Brookings Bombers Gray 13/14U team split a doubleheader against Pierre 13/14U on Wednesday afternoon at Bob Shelden Field.

The Bombers took game one 14-8 and then lost game two 16-3. Brookings is now 6-17 and plays a doubleheader at Watertown on Thursday starting at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Brookings 14, Pierre 8

Brookings scored six runs in the fifth inning and then kept Pierre off the scoreboard in the sixth inning in game one.

Brookings took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Jess Johnson and Logan Schaar each walked with one out. Jess Johnson scored on a Kale Weiker sacrifice fly and then Schaar scored on a Shinji Numata single to make it 2-0. Numata then scored on a Rocco Murano single to push the lead to three.

Pierre tied the game in the top of the second. They loaded the bases up with two outs and then a batter was hit by a pitch. The next batter then hit two runners home with a single to make it 3-3.

Pierre took the lead in the top of the third. A triple and a hit batter put runners on the corner with two outs. Those two runners came home on an error and then another run scored on a different error to make it 6-3.

Brookings got one run back in the bottom of the third. Weiker was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Numata followed with a walk. Each runner advanced on a Murano fielders choice and then Weiker scored on a Noah Hamann ground out to make it 6-4.

Pierre doubled its lead in the top of the fourth. Both runs came from RBI singles to make it 8-4.

Brookings then tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Teagan Wallace walked to start the half inning and then scored on a double from Brayden Britnall. Jess Johnson and Numata each walked to load the bases up with two outs and then Liam Johnson was walked as well to make it 8-6. Murano followed with a two-run single to make it 8-8 heading into the fifth.

Wallace was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the fifth and Britnall followed with a walk. Wallace scored on an error and then Weiker was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 10-8. Murano hit Schaar home with a single and then a bases-loaded walk from Colin Andrews made it 12-8. Murano and Liam Johnson then scored on an error to make it 14-8.

Pierre put two runners on with one out in the top of the sixth but the next two batters flew out and the Bombers came away with the win.

The Bombers had five hits. Murano was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Numata and Britnall were each 1-for-2 with an RBI. Weiker had two RBIs without hits and Liam Johnson and Andrews each had an RBI without a hit.

Game 2: Pierre 16, Brookings 3 (4 inn.)

Brookings had 13 walks and that led to the 13-run loss in game two.

Pierre led 4-0 after an inning and a half. They scored a run on a single in the top of the first. Then a two-run single and a run from a steal of home in the second made it a four-run game.

Brookings cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second. Numata scored on a wild pitch and Hamann scored on a Wallace single to make it 4-2.

Pierre stretched the lead to 12-2 in the top of the third. Runs from a single and a steal of home made it 6-2. Then a two-run double and an RBI single pushed the lead to 9-2. Two runs from wild pitches and an RBI double made it a 10-run game.

Brookings scored a run on a Schaar single in the bottom of the third. However, Pierre then ended the game in the top of the fourth with four runs. A batter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and then two bases-loaded walks and a run on a ground out made it 16-3. The Bombers were unable to score in the bottom of the inning and the game ended due to the 10-run rule.

The Bombers had seven hits in the loss. Wallace and Schaar were each 1-for-2 with an RBI. Britnall, Jess Johnson, Numata, Hamann and Andrews were all 1-for-2.
