BROOKINGS The Brookings Chutes swept a junior legion baseball doubleheader against Sioux Falls East on Wednesday night at Bob Shelden Field.
Brookings won game one in walk-off fashion and then dominated game two 10-0. Brookings is now 6-3 and will play in Joe Palmer Invitational in Fargo, N.D., this weekend.
Game 1: Brookings 8, SF East 7
The Chutes scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh after giving up seven runs in the top of the inning and that led to the win in game one.
Brookings led 1-0 at the end of the second inning. Mason Diers led off the bottom of the second with a walk and Andrew Heinze was hit by a pitch the next at bat.Nolan Krogman then hit a single to load the bases up and Jude Meendering hit Diers home with a single to make it 1-0.
The Chutes extended the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth. Heinze hit a lead-off single and Connor Jones followed with a walk. Heinze advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a Parker Witte sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. Krogman then hit Jones home with a double and would later score on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.
A hit batter and back-to-back walks loaded the bases up for SF East in the top of the seventh. Another walk and an RBI single cut the lead in half. Then a sacrifice fly and a two-run double gave East the lead. An RBI single and a run from an error made it 7-4 heading into the final half inning.
Baker Hanson and Diers led off the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back walks. Two batters later Hanson walked as well to load the bases with one out but then Witte struck out for the second out. Krogman was then hit by a pitch to make it 7-5 and Meendering would come to the plate and clear the bases with a double and win the game for the Chutes.
Brookings had seven hits. Meendering was 3-for-5 with four RBIs and Krogman was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Noah Lease and Heinze were each 1-for-3.
Lease started the game for the Chutes and pitched five innings. He gave up no runs and two hits with 11 strikeouts and six walks. Krogman pitched an inning and a third and gave up five earned runs on one hit and had no strikeouts and three walks. Hanson pitched the final two thirds and gave up two runs, one earned, on two hits with no strikeouts or walks.
Game 2: Brookings 10, SF East 0
Brookings scored six runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to end the game via the 10-run rule.
Lease hit a lead-off double in the fourth and then scored on a Ben Schulte triple. Dixon Dauer hit Schulte home with a single to make it 2-0. Hanson followed with a double and then Dauer came home on a Heinze single and Hanson scored on a Tate Sonnenburg sacrifice fly to make it 10-0. Krogman hit an RBI double and Witte singled and scored on a ground out from Meendering to push the lead to 6-0.
Hanson would lead off the fifth with a double and two batters later scored on an error. Sonnnenburg reached on that error and Witte and Krogman then hit back-to-back singles to load the bases up with one out. Meendering would hit Witte and Sonnenburg home with a single and then Schulte hit an RBI single of his own to end the game.
The Chutes had 14 hits in the big victory. Meendering was 1-for-4 with three RBIs and Schulte was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Dauer and Heinze were each 1-for-3 with an RBI and Krogman was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Lease was 2-for-2, Hanson was 3-for-3 and Witte was 2-for-3. Sonnenburg had two RBIs without a hit.
Diers pitched a complete game for Brookings. He gave up no runs and one hit and had no strikeouts or walks.
