Open primaries measure a bad idea

Open primaries, as proposed in Amendment H, are a sham and should be rejected by South Dakota voters.

Amendment H would allow “interlopers,” for example, with no loyalty to Republican party principles of limited government, a strong, well-funded military, protecting constitutional freedoms including freedom of religion, securing Americas borders to ensure legal entry by immigrants, and revitalizing the American dream as an opportunity for all to interject themselves and their contrary sentiments toward these principles, into the selection process.

Attorney General Jackleys statement on Amendment H also notes that a candidate may list any party next to their name regardless of their party affiliation or registration, meaning a that a registered Democrat could choose to list himself/herself on the ballot as a Republican, or vice versa. Furthermore, outside money has been pushing open primaries across the nation for years.

According to InfluenceWatch.org, The Open Society Policy Center (OSPC), a lobbying group associated with the Open Society Network and the Open Society Foundations, reporte spending over $161 million lobbying on behalf of open primaries from May 2002-April 2023.

The Open Society Foundation is principally funded through the philanthropic initiatives of atheist billionaire George Soros.

South Dakotas current closed primaries are clean, and statutorily sound, and have served our state well.

Viable political parties should continue being allowed to exclusively choose their own primary candidates to advance on to general elections.

Amendment H deserves to be heartily rejected by South Dakota voters.
