Bobcats drop two games to O’Gorman

SIOUX FALLS The Brookings baseball team dropped to 2-6 on the season after getting swept in a doubleheader with OGorman on Tuesday night.

The Bobcats lost game one 10-6 and then fell in game two 10-2. Brookings will have a week off and play a doubleheader at Aberdeen Central on April 21 with the first game starting at 2 p.m.

Game 1: OGorman 10, Brookings 6

The Knights scored six runs to tie the game in the fifth inning and then scored four runs in the sixth to win the game.

Brookings led 2-0 at the end of the first inning. Tre Christopherson led off the game with a single and Talon Hyde and Jase Bauer walked to load up the bases. Christopherson scored on a passed ball. Nolan Wagner pinch ran for Hyde and scored on a sacrifice fly from Tane Friedrich to make it 2-0.

The Bobcats scored three more runs in the top of the second. Maxten Jensen and Cooper Schneider walked with one out and Christopherson followed with a single to load the bases up. Jensen was out on a fielders choice but then Bauer hit a two-out bases-clearing double to make it 5-0 heading into the third.

Brookings stretched the lead to 6-0 in the top of the fourth. Christopherson got another hit and this time it was a two-out triple. Wagner then hit Christopherson home with a single.

Disaster then struck for the Cats in the bottom of the fifth. A hit batter and back-to-back walks loaded the bases up with no outs. The Knights then hit back-to-back singles to cut the lead to 6-2. Another hit batter made it 6-3 and then two runs came home on a fielders choice and that made it 6-5. A two-out double tied the game for the Knights and made it anyone’s game heading into the final two innings.

Tyson Antonen led off the sixth with a single but then Winston Plummer hit into a double play. Jensen then popped out to end the half inning.

The Knights led off the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back singles. An RBI single then gave OG its first lead of the game and then a two-run double made it 9-6. The Knights scored one more run on a wild pitch and it was 10-6 OGorman heading into the final inning.

Christopherson and Wagner each walked with one out to put two runners on. Bauer then lined into a fielders choice and Friedrich lined out to end the game.

Brookings had six hits in the loss. Christopherson was 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Bauer was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Wagner was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Antonen was 1-for-3 and Friedrich had an RBI without a hit.

Kysin Reuer got the start for Brookings in game one and pitched four innings. He gave up six earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Ryan Lockrem pitched one and one third innings. He gave up four earned runs on five hits with one strikeout and no walks. Friedrich got the final two outs for the Bobcats.

Game 2: OGorman 10, Brookings 2

The Knights led 3-0 after two innings and never looked back. Their first two runs of the game came on a two-run home run in the bottom of the first. An RBI single in the second then stretched the lead to three.

Brookings got on the board in the top of the third with an RBI triple from Bauer. However, the Knights then scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth. The first run of the inning came from an error and then an RBI single made it 5-1. Two more runs scored on a fielders choice pushed the lead to 7-1 heading into the fifth.

OG would score three more runs in the fifth. The Knights loaded the bases up with no outs and then back-to-back walks scored two runs. Another run came in on a fielders choice to make it 10-1 heading into the sixth.

Brookings scored another run on a Bauer triple but that was it and the Bobcats were swept.

The Bobcats had six hits as a team. Bauer was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Friedrich, Antonen, Schneider and Jay Harris were each 1-for-3.

Antonen pitched the first three innings for the Bobcats. He gave up six runs, three earned, on four hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Harris pitched the final three innings and gave up four runs, three earned, on two hits with one strikeout and seven walks.
