Three Bobcats come in sixth at state, Sioux Valley’s Vandeweerd comes in 3rd

SIOUX FALLS – Three Brookings boys wrestlers finished in sixth place in the Class A State Tournament their respective classes at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.

Micah Stern, Blake Kanniegieter and Zach Hagemann were the Bobcat wrestlers that place on the boys’ side.

Micah Stern competed in the 138-pound weight class. He pinned Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Josiah Kauffman in 5:23 in the first round before getting pinned in 3:32 by Sturgis’ Mason Hagen in the quarterfinals. Stern then pinned Lennox’s Kedren Fergen in his first consolation match and then won an 8-6 decision over West Central’s Alex Siemonsma to advance to the consolation semifinals. He then lost a 5-0 decision to Harrisburg’s Steven Lamont in the consolation semifinals and then lost a 10-8 decision to Kauffman in the fifth-place match.

Kanniegieter competed in the 190-pound weight class. He won an 18-3 technical fall over Harrisburg’s Chris Simunek in the first round before losing a 14-4 major decision to Vermillion’s Padraig Fulton in the quarterfinals. Kannegieter then pinned Madison’s Brody Nielsen in 2:05 in his first consolation match and then won a 15-0 technical fall over Huron’s Lucas Chaparro to advance to the consolation semifinals. In the consolation semifinals Kannegieter lost a 4-2 decision to Brandon Valley’s Anneyso Ahmed and then he lost a 10-7 sudden victory to Fulton in the fifth-place match.

Zach Hagemann competed at 215. He won a 14-5 major decision over Rapid City Stevens’ Lincoln Mitchell in the first round before losing a 7-2 decision to Brandon Valley’s Cody Lindekugel in the quarterfinals. Hagemann would then win a 5-3 tiebreaker one decision over Dakota Valley’s Cooper Bernard in his first consolation match and then won a 9-2 decision over Spearfish’s Alex Marich to advance to the consolation semifinals. In the consolation semifinals Hagemann was pinned by Sioux Falls Washington’s Hayes Petersen in 2:18 and then he was pinned by Rapid City Central’s Morgan Woods in the fifth-place match.

Sioux Valley

Owen Vandeweerd was the only boys wrestler to place for the Cossacks and he came in third place in the Class B 285-pound weight class. Vandeweerd lost a 5-1decision to Elk Point-Jefferson’s Addison Peterson in the first round. He then rattled off five-straight victories.

Vandeweerd won an 11-1 major decision over St. Thomas Moore’s Marty Reeve in his first consolation match and then he won a 6-1 sudden victory over Mobridge-Pollock’s Wyatt Zeigler.

Sioux Valley’s Owen Vandeweerd has his hand raised after beating Canton’s Gunnar Swenson in the third-place match of the 285-pound weight class at the Class B State Wrestling Tournament in Sioux Falls.

Vanddeweerd won a 1-0 decision over Kingsbury County’s Breyten Johnson in the third round of the consolation bracket and then he won a 4-1 decision over Faulkton Area’s Tristen Baloun in the consolation semifinals. Vandeweerd would then win a 2-1 decision over Canton’s Gunnar Swenson in the third-place match.
