SIOUX FALLS The Brookings Bullets 16U team split a pair of games at Harmadon Park in Sioux Falls on Thursday night.
The Bullets lost 12-3 to Huron in their first game of the night but then bounced back with a 14-8 win over Sioux Falls Post 15. Brookings is now 8-23 on the year and will host a doubleheader with Aberdeen at Erv Huether Field in Brookings on Friday starting at 12 p.m.
Huron 12, Brookings 3
Huron led 9-0 through the first three and a half innings and that was the final losing margin in the first game of the night for the Bullets.
Huron scored four runs in the top of the second. The first two runs came home on a single and then a two-run triple doubled the lead.
Huron then added five in the top of the fourth. Two runs scored on a single and then another two-run triple made it 8-0. Then a run from a ground out made it 9-0.
Brookings scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Mack Nelson and Jace Jaacks scored on a single and then Rylan Hesser scored on an error to make it 9-3.
Huron got two of those runs back in the top of the fifth. Both runs were scored on an error to make it 11-3. Then a run from a single in the sixth made the final 12-3.
Brookings had three hits. Van Ede was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Jaacks was 3-for-3. Grant Horn was 1-for-3 and Lincoln Helmbolt had an RBI without a hit.
Nelson pitched the first three innings and gave up seven earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Helmbolt pitched the next three innings and gave up five runs, four earned, on five hits with two walks and no strikeouts. Eli Ellsworth pitched the final inning and gave up no runs and one hit with no walks and no strikeouts.
Brookings 14, Sioux Falls Post 15 8
Brookings scored eight runs in the top of the third and that pushed the Bullets to the victory in their second game of the night.
Sioux Falls led 3-0 at the end of the first inning. They scored runs on a triple and two singles to make it a three-run game.
Brookings then tied the game in the top of the second. Aiden Adelman was walked with the bases loaded and then Hesser and Ellsworth scored on a Camden Reicks double to make it 3-3.
Sioux Falls pushed the lead to three again in the bottom of the inning. They scored a run on a single and then two runs on a double made it 6-3.
The Bullets responded with eight runs in the top of the third. Nelson scored on a Wesden Van Ede single and then Horn scored on a passed ball and Van Ede scored on a Nelson ground out to tie the game. Ellsworth hit Helmbolt home with a triple and later scored on an error to make it 8-6. Bode TeKrony scored on a single from Nelson and Adelman scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-6. Then Horn hit Jaacks home with a single to push the lead to 11-6.
Brookings added two runs in the top of the fourth. Helmbolt scored on an error by the catcher and Ellsworth came home on a sacrifice fly from Reicks to make it 13-6.
Sioux Falls would get those two runs back in the bottom of the fourth. The first run came on an error and then another run from an error made it 13-8.
Ellsworth was walked with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth to make the final 14-8.
Brookings had eight hits in the win. Reicks was 1-for-3 with three RBIs and Ellsworth was 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Horn was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Nelson was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Van Ede was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Helmbolt was 1-for-1. TeKrony and Adelman each had an RBI without a hit.
Van Ede pitched four innings and gave up eight runs, one earned, on nine hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Hesser pitched the final inning and gave up no runs or hits and had two strikeouts and no walks.
