OMAHA South Dakota State opened the Summit League Baseball Tournament on Wednesday with an 11-2 loss to Oral Roberts.
The top-seeded Golden Eagles scored seven runs in the second inning and then kept the No. 4 Jackrabbits off the scoreboard until the eighth inning.
Makani Tanaka led off the bottom of the second with a single for ORU. Ethan Fender then reached on an error and Keaton Campbell singled to load the bases up with no outs. Owen Coil then hit a two-run double and Will Edmunson walked with the bases loaded. Cooper Combs hit a sacrifice fly and then Wailele Kane-Yate came to the plate with two runners on. He hit the ball over the left field wall and the Golden Eagles led 7-0.
ORU scored three more runs in the fifth. Tanaka was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He advanced to second on a Coil walk and then scored on a Martell Davis single. Davis and Coil then scored on an error by the center fielder to make it 10-0.
The Golden Eagles pushed another run across in the seventh. Campbell and Coil each walked to lead off the inning. Campbell then made his way to third on a Davis fly out and scored on a wild pitch to make it 11-0.
Jess Bellows led off the top of the eighth with a single for SDSU. Davis Carr then walked and Nicholas Werk hit a single to load the bases up. Bellows scored on a Sintek sacrifice fly and Carr scored on a Nolan Grawe sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 11-2. However, the Jacks were not able to score any more runs.
SDSU had eight hits. Sintek and Grawe were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Bellows was 2-for-4 and Carr and Werk were each 1-for-3. Adam Benes and Bryce Ronken were each 1-for-4.
Arlen Peters got the start for SDSU on the mound and pitched an inning and a third. He gave up seven runs, six earned, on four hits with three walks and no strikeouts. Ty Madison pitched the next two and two thirds innings and gave up no runs and one hit with one walk.
Keagan Jirschele pitched the next two innings for the Jacks. He gave up three runs, one earned, on one hit with two strikeouts and two walks. Dane Toman pitched two thirds of an inning and gave up one earned run with four walks. Drew McDowell pitched the final inning and a third and gave up no runs and two hits.
SDSU will play No. 3 seeded Omaha in an elimination game on Thursday at noon. The Jacks went 4-2 against the Mavericks this season.
