The Brookings baseball team lost all four games it played over the weekend as the Bobcats were swept in doubleheaders against Pierre and Mitchell.
Brookings hosted Pierre on Friday and then played at Mitchell on Sunday. The Bobcats lost the four games by a total of 11 runs.
The Bobcats are now 9-13 and host a doubleheader against Sioux Falls Jefferson on Tuesday. The first game is set to begin at 5 p.m.
Friday
Game 1: Pierre 2, Brookings 0
The two teams combined for seven hits in the first game on Friday but the Governors were able to take advantage of a couple mishaps by Brookings. Pierre scored a run on a fielders choice in the fourth and then scored a run on an error in the sixth.
Brookings had four hits. Jay Harris was 1-for-2 and Jase Bauer and Winston Plummer were each 1-for-3.
Tyson Antonen pitched a complete game for the Cats. He gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Game 2: Pierre 12, Brookings 9
Pierre scored seven runs in the fifth inning and that proved to be the difference in game two.
The Bobcats held a 6-4 lead at the end of the first. The Governors scored runs on bases loaded walks, two RBI singles and a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0 at the end of the top of the first.
Antonen scored a Harris ground out to put the Bobcats on the scoreboard. Then an RBI single from Maxten Jensen and back-to-back bases loaded walks tied the game. A two-run single from Tre Christopherson put the Bobcats up 6-4 heading into the second.
Pierre cut the lead to 6-5 in the top of the second with an RBI single. Then an RBI double from Plummer in the bottom of the fourth made it 7-5 Brookings.
The Governors then struck and took the lead in the fifth. A two-run single tied the game and then a two-run single made it 9-7 Pierre. An RBI single and a run from an error then pushed the lead to 11-7 and a run on a ground out made it a seven-run inning for Pierre.
Jude Meendering scored on a ground out from Cooper Schneider in the fifth and then Antonen hit an RBI single but that was all the Cats could muster in the final three innings and they took the loss.
Brookings had eight hits as a team. Christopherson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Plummer was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Meendering was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Jensen was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Tane Friedrich was 1-for-2, and Bauer was 1-for-4. Schneider had two RBIs without a hit.
Nolan Krogman pitched the first four innings. He gave up nine earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Baker Hanson pitched the final three innings and gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits with no strikeouts or walks.
Sunday
Game 1: Mitchell 10, Brookings 5
Mitchell scored in every inning that he had plate appearances in game one.
The Bobcats trailed 3-2 at the end of the first. Talon Hyde hit a two-run single to give Brookings the lead in the top of the first. However, three RBI singles in the bottom of the inning gave Mitchell the lead after one.
Mitchell pushed the lead to 4-2 in the second on a run from an error and then a bases-loaded walk in the third made it 5-2 through three innings.
The Kernels scored two more in the fourth. The first came from a triple and the next from a single, making it 7-2 going into the fifth.
Two more runs came across for Mitchell in the fifth. One came on a passed ball and another on an RBI single. Then a sacrifice fly in the sixth made it 10-2. Hyde and Harris scored on an error and Schneider hit an RBI double in the seventh but it was too little too late.
Brookings had 11 hits. Hyde was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Schneider was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Harris and Christopherson were each 1-for-4 and Plummer was 1-for-2. Friedrich was 2-for-4 and Antonen was 1-for-5.
Wagner got the start again for the Bobcats and pitched four innings. He gave up seven runs, five earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Ryan Lockrem pitched the final two and gave up three runs, one earned, on three hits with one walk and no strikeouts.
Game 2: Mitchell 6, Brookings 5
The Kernels scored three runs in the fifth that gave them the lead and they didnt give it up the rest of the way.
Mitchell led 2-0 after the first inning. The Kernels scored runs on a single and a triple in the bottom of the first.
Brookings would tie the game in the top of the second. Ryder Anderson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and then Harris scored on a fielders choice to make it 2-2.
Mitchell regained the lead in the bottom of the second on a run from an error. However, Brookings tied things back up in the top of the third with an RBI double from Harris.
The Bobcats then took their only lead of the game in the top of the fourth when Christopherson hit a sacrifice fly. Mitchell then hit a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth to secure the lead again and this time it didnt give it up as it got an insurance run on an RBI single to make it 6-4.
Christopherson would score on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh but Brookings was unable to score anymore and suffered its fourth loss of the weekend.
The Bobcats had five hits as a team. Christopherson was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Harris was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hyde and Antonen were each 1-for-3. Anderson had an RBI without a hit.
Hyde pitched a complete game. He gave up six earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
