SIOUX FALLS The Oral Roberts women Omaha and St. Thomas men each advance to the semifinals in the Summit League Tournament on Thursday.
The No. 2 seeded Golden Eagle women took care of business against South Dakota in the first game of the day at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center. Then in the night session the top-seeded Mavericks were able to fend off Kansas City and the No. 2 seeded Tommies cruised to victory over Denver.
Each team will find out who their Saturday semifinal opponent will be on Friday.
Women
No. 2 Oral Roberts 70, No. 7 South Dakota 50
The Coyotes hung with the Golden Eagles for the first 20 minutes but then ORU blew USD out in the second half.
ORU led 16-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Golden Eagles then pushed the lead to 30-21 by halftime. ORU outscored USD 19-4 in the third to take a 49-25 heading into the fourth. That was all she wrote.
The Golden Eagles shot 44.8% from the field and were 3-of-11 from three. Jalei Ogelsby had 18 points off of the bench to lead ORU. Taleyah Jones had 15 points and five rebounds. Megahn Weinrich had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Ruthie Udoumoh had 11 points and seven rebounds.
USD shot 35.1% from the field and was 6-of-29 from deep. Summit League Player of the Year Grace Larkins had 24 points, 13 rebounds and five assists in her final game in a Coyote uniform. Alexi Hempe had 11 points.
Men
No. 1 Omaha 70, No. 8 Kansas City 61
Omaha led 22-16 with 8:15 to play in the first half. The Mavericks then went on a 13-4 run to go up 35-20 with 2:42 to go in the half. They led 40-25 at halftime.
The Mavs pushed the lead to 45-26 two minutes into the second half but the Roos went on a 14-2 run to cut the lead to 47-40 with 12:47 to play. Omaha extended the lead back to 15 with 3:55 left but Kansas City didnt fully go away. The Roos made 65-58 with 1:11 to go but then a 3-pointer from Lance Waddles with 49 seconds left sealed the deal for the Mavericks.
The Mavericks shot 46.3% from the field and were 5-of-16 from three. Marquel Sutton, the Summit League Player of the Year, had 28 points, 11 rebounds and four steals to lead Omaha. JJ White had 14 points and seven assists. Isaac Ondekane and JaSean Glover each had 10 points.
Kansas City shot 32.8% from the field and was 9-of-25 from beyond the arc. The Roos were led by Jamar Brown who had 27 points. Jayson Petty had 15 points and seven rebounds. Cameron Faas had nine points and eight rebounds.
No. 2 St. Thomas 80, No. 7 Denver 62
The Tommies used a strong end to the first half to take a 48-32 lead into halftime. UST would then extend the lead to 20 near the midway point of the second half and would win with ease.
St. Thomas shot 51.1% from the field and was 10-of-20 from beyond the arc. The Tommies were led by Miles Barnstable who had 17 points and six rebounds. Kendall Blue had 15 points and Carter Bjerke had 13 points.
Denver shot 45.7% from the field and was 4-of-13 from three. DeAndre Craig led the Pioneers with 15 points. Josh Pickett had 14 points.
