MITCHELL Over 350 swimmers competed in the South Dakota State Short Course Swim Championships at the Mitchell Recreation Center over the weekend.
The Brookings Swim Club had 28 swimmers competing and BSC had two state champions over the weekend as Quinn Humphrey brought home the 9-10 year old girls titles in the 50 and 100 yard breaststroke events and Wyatt deBlonk brought home the 11-12 division title in the 50 yard freestyle.
BSC had three high point winners for scoring the most individual points over the weekend. Jane Meland was 5th overall in the Girls 8&Under division. Quinn Humphrey was 3rd overall in the Girls 9-10 division, and Wyatt deBlonk was 5th in the Boys 11-12 division.
Numerous swimmers also achieved personal best times over the weekend and swam great.
The enthusiasm and energy that the BSC swimmers brought to the State Meet pool deck was contagious, said BSC coach Allison Meland. I am so proud of the hard work each swimmer put in this season, and I hope they recognize how much they have improved since September.
The highlight of every state meet is the team relays that are the last events of each 3-day session and BSC had great success in these events as well, in which Meland said the following the relays were very fun to watch as you can tell each one was swimming their heart out for the teammates.
The BSC team will be on break now until they start up the long course season in April, in which Meland feels BSC will be set up for an exciting season.
