HURON The Brookings Bobcats received contributions from everywhere as they closed the regular season with a 40-14 win over the Huron Tigers on Thursday night.
The win helped the Bobcats finish the regular season with a 7-2 record and earn the No. 3 seed and a matchup with Tea Area at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium in Brookings on Halloween night.
It was great to get a win and for all of our guys to contribute as much as they did, Brookings head coach Brady Clark said. Big players step up in big games and we had a lot of players step up tonight in all three phases of the game and make some great plays.
The Bobcats struck first with a long opening drive that took nearly eight minutes off the clock and ended with a five-yard touchdown pass from Gavin Anderson to Bergen Tetzlaff. With Brookings ahead 7-0, the Bobcats doubled the lead on Hurons first drive of the game when Jay Harris returned a Colton McNeil interception 20 yards for a touchdown to give the Bobcats a 14-0 lead one minute later.
After the Bobcat defense picked up another stop, the offense attempted a fourth down conversion on the Brookings 34-yard line but Will Conrad was stopped at the line of scrimmage. On the next play, McNeil connected with Anderson Porisch for a 34-yard touchdown pass on the final play of the first quarter to cut the lead to 14-7.
But Tetzlaff scored his second touchdown of the game from two yards out with 2:07 left in the second quarter to give Brookings a 20-7 lead at halftime and Anderson found Harris for a 44-yard touchdown pass to put the Bobcats up 26-7 with 6:56 left in the third quarter.
Landon Hulsts 32-yard touchdown run with 4:49 left in the third cut the Bobcats lead down to 26-14 but Anderson connected with Blake Kannegieter on a 17-yard touchdown pass with 1:34 left in the third quarter and Tetzlaff hit Wainman for a nine-yard touchdown pass with 7:07 left in the fourth quarter for the final score of the game.
Anderson completed 9-of-12 passes for 206 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Harris finished with a pair of interceptions and Wainman finished with five catches for 89 yards and two touchdowns.
With the regular season in the books, the Bobcats will turn their attention to the Titans. After defeating Tea Area 29-22 in Brookings on Oct. 4, the Bobcats like their chances in that matchup not only because of the previous results, but how they are playing going into the most important time of the year.
I feel like we are in a solid place right now as a program as we get ready for a strong playoff run, Clark said. We are almost fully healthy and we are playing team football, which is huge. We will need all 11 guys on the field doing their job if we want to be successful moving forward.
