Kaedyn Sapp records 1,000th kill as Cossacks top Milbank

VOLGA Sioux Valleys Kaedyn Sapp reached a career milestone on Tuesday night as the Cossacks extended their win streak to seven matches after beating Milbank in four sets.

Milbank forced a fourth set by scoring five straight points in the third set to win 25-22. The Cossacks then responded with a 25-14 win in set four to take the match. Sioux Valley head coach Jill Vincent said her team responded really well after giving away the third set.

I thought we came back in the fourth set with some vengeance. I think we got a little distracted in the third set, but we cleaned up some of our errors and got a handle on it, Vincent said.

The Cossacks are now 14-1 on the season and none of their matches have gone to five sets. Vincent pointed to her teams poise as a result of no of five-set matches so far this season.

We just have the tendency to take control of the game and we have a calmness about us that I really like. [The players] always feel like they can do anything and I think thats why we havent gone to a fifth set yet, Vincent said.

Sioux Valley won the first two sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-18. Heading into the night Sapp needed 15 kills to get to 1,000 career kills. That looked like it wasnt going to happen late in the third set but with the match going to the fourth set, the senior was able to reach that milestone.

Sapp recorded the 1,000th kill near the midway point of the fourth set and she finished the night with 20 kills. For Vincent, the highly productive night from Sapp wasnt surprising.

Shes been really steady. Against De Smet I think she had over 20 kills. You know she can put points out there, but shes also one of my best passers. She just does everything for us. Quietly does everything. Lots of digs too. Its nice to have her on the court at all times, Vincent said.

Sioux Valley had 53 kills as a team and 83 digs. The Cossacks had 51 assists and six service aces.

Sapp led the team in kills and she added nine digs. Adison Renkly had 13 kills and 15 digs. Lacey Langland had eight kills and Emma Gorvin had 11 digs and five kills. Caitlin Russell had 32 digs and Sunny Hesby had 29 assists. Machaela Gerashch had 19 assists and eight digs. Keyra Kruse had six kills.

Tuesday nights match was the fifth in the past four days for the Cossacks as they swept the three games they played in the Lake Preston Tournament on Saturday and then won in three sets against Tri-Valley Monday night. Sioux Valley will now have over a week off as they play at Flandreau on Oct. 3 at 7 p.m.

Vincent said over the break she just wants her team to continue to have fun.

We need to work on our communication and playing for each other and having fun. Before the last set we said Lets go out there and have some fun. We just have to play volleyball. Quit thinking so much and play volleyball. I think they did that tonight, Vincent said.
