Brookings Chutes lose two games in Sioux Falls

HARRISBURG The Brookings Junior Legion team dropped two games over the weekend at the Alex Kummer Memorial Tournament in Harrisburg.

The Chutes played two games on Saturday and lost to Mitchell 14-1 and Sioux Falls Post 15 18-5.

Brookings plays a doubleheader at Post 15 West on Tuesday in Sioux Falls on Tuesday. The first game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.

Mitchell 14, Brookings 1 (5 innings)

Mitchell scored nine runs in the third inning and that allowed them to win the game via the 10-run rule.

They scored one run in the first inning on an error. Mitchell then added four more runs in the second. They scored runs on a ground out, a fielders choice, an error and a wild pitch to make it 5-0.

The first run of the nine-run third inning came when a Mitchell batter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Another run came in on a wild pitch and a two-run single put them up 9-0. An RBI single and two runs on a fielders choice put them up 12. Then a balk from the pitcher with the bases loaded and a run on a ground out made it 14-0.

Brookings lone run of the game came in the fifth. Back-to-back singles from Talon Hyde and Cooper Schneider put runners on first and second and Gavin Hammrich getting hit by a pitch loaded the bases. Tane Freidrich was then hit by a pitch as well and thats how the Chutes got their only run of the game as they were unable to score any more runs.

Brookings had three hits in the game. Schneider was 2-for-3 and Hyde was 1-for-2.

Kysin Rauer pitched the first two innings for the Chutes. He gave up nine runs, four earned, on two hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Jay Harris pitched the final two innings and gave up five runs, four earned, on three hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Sioux Falls 18, Brookings 5

The two teams were tied heading into the fourth inning and Sioux Falls outscored Brookings 13-0 the rest of the way.

Sioux Falls jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. The first three runs came on a bases-clearing double and a run on a wild pitch gave them a four-run lead.

Brookings got on the board with one run in the bottom of the first. Tre Christophers led off the inning with a single and but then was out at second on a Nolan Wagner fielders choice. Schneider then hit a single and Wagner scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-1.

Sioux Falls hit an RBI single in the top of the second to push the lead back to four, but the Chutes tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

Breck Wilson was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Ryder Anderson drew a one-out walk. Christopherson hit a single to load the bases up and Wagner hit a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to three. Hyde was then walked to load the bases up again and Schneider hit a double to left field to make it 5-4. A bases loaded walk then tied things up 5-5 heading into the third.

Neither team scored in the third but Sioux Falls scored four runs in the fourth. The first inning came on a wild pitch and the next was from a ground out. A two-run double then pushed the lead to four heading into the fifth. They added another run in the fifth with an RBI single.

Four more runs in the sixth extended the lead nine. A two-run single, RBI single and a run on a wild pitch made it 14-5 heading into the seventh.

Sioux Falls then fully put the game out of reach as an RBI single and a three-run double made it 18-5 heading into the final half inning.

Schneider was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Hyde was 2-for-3. Christopherson was 3-for-5.
