OGDEN, Utah Dylan Joness go-ahead shot with 0.1 seconds to play foiled a South Dakota State comeback as the Jackrabbits erased a 13-point deficit in the final minutes only to fall 75-73 to Weber State in their first game of the Big SkySummit Challenge on Tuesday night.
After both teams battled to a 7-7 tie in the opening minutes, SDSU used a 7-0 run to take a 14-7 lead on Nate Barnharts jumper with 14:54 to go in the first half. The Wildcats responded with a 10-3 run to regain the lead and the two teams went back and forth before Weber State held a 40-35 advantage at halftime.
The Wildcats opened the second half with a 8-3 run and held a 48-38 advantage with 17:49 to play. SDSU got within 60-56 on a pair of free throws by Zeke Mayo with 8:43 remaining but Weber State used an 11-2 run to open up the lead to 71-58 with 3:49 to go.
SDSU went on a 15-2 run capped by Mayos lay-up that tied the game at 73-73 with 28.4 seconds left in regulation but Weber State got the ball into the hands of Jones, who knocked down the go-ahead shot for a game-high 23 points that sealed the win for the Wildcats.
Mayo finished with 20 points, five rebounds and two assists for the Jacks while Appel had 13 points, four assists and four rebounds. William Kyle III had 15 points, four rebounds and two assists and Matt Mims scored nine points with four rebounds and two assists. Charlie Easley had six points, five rebounds and two assists while Barnhart had six points, six rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal.
SDSU shot 50 percent from the floor and 9-for-22 (40.9%) on 3-pointers while making 10-of-13 (76.9%) of their free throws. The Jacks also out-rebounded the Wildcats 33-30 and committed 10 turnovers to Weber States seven.
SDSU fell to 7-8 with the loss and will play its second game of the Big Sky Summit Challenge when they host Montana State at Frost Arena on Saturday afternoon.
