College basketball: Jackrabbit men, women both pick up weekend victories

The South Dakota State basketball teams each won on the road on Saturday. The men beat Wichita State 79-69 and the women topped Northern Iowa 78-59.

Men

SDSU 79, Wichita State 69

The Jackrabbits improved to 5-5 with the win and it was a consistent effort on Saturday night that lifted them to the victory over the Shockers.

Wichita State led 23-20 with 7:21 remaining in the first half and the Jacks then went on a 10-0 run. Neither team scored in the final 1:56 of the first half and SDSU took a 32-26 lead into the locker room.

SDSU scored the first eight points of the second half to extend the lead to 40-26. The Jacks lead stretched to 17 with just over eight minutes to play and the Shockers pulled to within nine with 3:30 left. However, SDSU was able to fend off Wichita State in the final three and a half minutes to pick up its fifth win of the season.

The Jacks shot 44.4% from the field and were 12-of-33 from three. They were led by Zeke Mayo who had 25 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Kalen Garry had 22 points and seven rebounds. Charlie Easley had 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Matthew Mors had nine points. William Kyle III had seven points and six rebounds.

Wichita State (7-3) shot 31.4% from the field and was 11-of-27 from three. Colby Rogers led the Shockers with 21 points, four rebounds and four assists. Harlond Beverly had 18 points and six rebounds. Xavier Bell had 11 points. Kenny Pohto had nine points and 11 rebounds.

The Shockers won the rebound battle 45-40. SDSU had 10 steals and the Shockers had 12 turnovers. The Jacks had 13 turnovers. SDSU was 11-of-13 at the free throw line and Wichita State was 14-of-20.

The Jackrabbit men host Mayville State on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Women

SDSU 78, Northern Iowa 59

A strong second and third quarter lifted the Jacks over the Panthers on Saturday.

SDSU trailed 18-16 after one quarter and was then able to outscore UNI 18-13 in the second quarter to take a 34-31 lead into halftime. The Jacks came out of the locker room strong and outscored the Panthers 24-10 in the third and led 58-41 going into the fourth. They then won the fourth quarter 20-18 and improved to 5-3.

The Jacks shot 51.8% from the field and were 7-of-15 from three. They were led by Paige Meyer who had 23 points and four assists. Madison Mathiowetz had 16 points and five rebounds. Brooklyn Meyer had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Tori Nelson had 10 points and seven rebounds. Madysen Vlastuin had nine points and six rebounds. Jenna Hopp had seven points.

UNI (1-7) shot 30.9% from the field and was 7-of-28 from three. Maya McDermott had 23 points and six rebounds to lead the Panthers. Emerson Green and Rachael Heittola each had nine points. Shateah Wetering had eight points.

SDSU dominated the glass, winning the rebound battle 38-20. The Jacks had 12 turnovers and the Panthers had 10. SDSU was 13-of-18 at the free throw line and UNI was 18-of-24.

The Jacks host Dordt on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
