South Dakota State competes in four different meets

The South Dakota State track & field teams had a busy week as they competed in four meets in a span of four days.

SDSU took the track on Wednesday at two different meets as a majority of the teams went to the University of Minnesota in the Gary Wilson Invitational. The Jackrabbits also competed in the Mount Marty Twilight in Yankton on Wednesday.

The Jacks then kicked off the Drake Relays in Des Moines on Thursday. That meet concluded on Saturday and some SDSU athletes competed in the Steve Scott Invitational in Iriving, Calif.

On May 3, SDSU will head south to Vermillion for the USD Tune-Up in the final week before the conference meet.

SATURDAY

The women’s javelin throw record was broken on Saturday at the hands of Nora Peterson as SDSU garnered multiple school all-time marks at two meets in Iowa and California.

Drake Relays

Down in Des Moines, Nora Peterson earned the lone championship flag for South Dakota State at the meet. She won the javelin throw with a new personal-best mark of 156-04.00 as Josie Curry took 10th with a 121-05.00.

The DMR squad of Grace Waage, Erika Kuntz, Claire Beckman and Leah Hisken finished sixth with the second-fastest time in school history, 11:31.24.

Josh Becker, Andrew Moeller, Sam Castle and Will Lohr teamed up for the DMR, clocking a 10:09.12 for an 11th place finish overall.
In the men’s hammer throw, Hunter Wallster finished 14th overall with a mark of 191-10.00

Steve Scott Invitational

Out in Irvine, California, Jaiden Boomsma took third in the 100-meter dash with her new PR of 11.81 as Brielle Dixon finished eighth in 12.02. Boomsma’s time solidifies her spot of fourth on the All-Time List before she also finished sixth overall—and first in heat three—in the 200-meter dash with her time of 24.70.

Dixon then blazed into second place of the 100-meter hurdles with a new personal best time of 13.60, just .01 from tying the school record. Savannah Risseeuw also competed, finishing 11th overall in 14.27 seconds.

Risseeuw then clocked a 1:03.59 in the 400-meter hurdles for a sixth place finish in the event.

Jake Werner led a pack of Jackrabbits in the 100-meter dash, taking seventh place in 10.66 seconds. Evan Henderson was ninth with a PR of 10.70 as Drew Olson was 17th with a 10.83 and Carter Toews ran a 10.86 for a PR and 19th place.

Werner then clocked a 21.51 in the 200-meter dash to tie his PR, maintain his spot on the SDSU Top 10 List and take third place overall. Additionally, Henderson (21.95) came 13th, Toews (21.99, PR) was 15th and Olson (22.22) finished 20th.

James Pierce ran a 48.99 for fifth place in the men’s 400-meter dash as Thailan Hallman finished sixth in 49.01.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Henderson, Werner, Toews and Olson teamed up and took second place in the event with a time of 40.83. The clocking is now sixth on the All-Time List.

THURSDAY

Drake Relays

DES MOINES — A group of SDSU women’s track and field athletes competed in four distance events on Thursday in their first day of action at the Drake Relays, with all of the Jackrabbits placing in the top 20 of their heats and events.

Grace Waage and Nicole Greyer hit the track first for the women’s unseeded 1500-meter run. Waage ran a 4:30.90 for ninth place overall as Greyer finished 15th in 4:35.60.

Kayla Christopherson represented SDSU in the 3000-meter steeplechase, racing into 10th place in heat one with a time of 11:08.96. She finished 27th overall in the event.

Leah Hisken clocked a time of 16:24.70 for a 16th place finish in the seeded 5000-meter run.

Finally, Jessica Lutmer cruised to fourth place in the 10k with her new personal best time of 34:52.47, exploding up to third on the all-time list. This was her first 10k race as a Jackrabbit.

WEDNESDAY

South Dakota State split between two meets for track and field action in two different states, accruing numerous new top 10 entries and personal bests throughout competition on Wednesday.

Gary Wilson Invitational

A majority of the Jackrabbit action took place at the University of Minnesota Track and Field Stadium on Wednesday.

On the women’s side, Maggie Madsen finished eighth in the 100-meter dash finals, clocking a time of 12.58. She went on to finish in the top 10 of the 200-meter dash, as well, running a 25.79 for seventh overall.

Erika Kuntz won the women’s 400-meter dash with a 56.01, a new PR and the sixth-best time in school history. Emily Rystrom finished third in a personal best 57.54 and Jessica Boekelheide ran a 58.41 for eighth.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Abby Hughes finished 10th overall with her clocking of 1:06.29.

Claire Beckman ran the 10th-fastest time in SDSU history to take sixth place in the 800-meter run in 2:10.64. Harley Fischer also finished in the top ten of the event, clocking a 2:14.79 for 10th as Reese Luze (2:16.19) and Emily Plucker (2:18.39) each ran new PRs.

Emma Ecker was third in the 1500-meter run, clocking a personal best of 4:39.56, while Abby Deutsch came 11th in 4:49.71 (PR) and Nicole Swanson ran a 4:59.08 for a PR and 14th place.

Caitlin Bright finished eighth in a time of 11:15.46 in the 3000-meter steeplechase as Nina Dawson clocked a PR of 11:20.16 for 11th.

Emma Gonzalez ran a new personal best of 17:30.61 in the 5000-meter run for a sixth place finish, followed close behind by Jenna Soine (17:32.35, PR). Hannah Neusch (19:22.53) also earned a new PR in the event.

Ryann Moline threw a personal best of 128-00.00 for second place in the javelin.

In the women’s discus, Milee Young finished third with her throw of 156-05.00 and Moline took 15th with a 124-02.00.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Boekelheide, Kuntz, Rystrom and Madsen ran a 3:51.02 for second place while the squad of Laura Bogue, Luze, Beckman and Fischer finished fifth in a time of 4:01.08.

In men’s action, Gunnar Gunderson clocked a time of 14.88 in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles for an eighth place finish.

Kudra Nzibariza clocked a time of 49.84 in the 400-meter dash to take seventh place overall.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Jeremiah Donahoe led the way in eighth place with a 55.08. Ryan Benson (55.56) and Gunderson (55.89) each ran new personal bests to finish 10th and 11th, respectively.

Sam Castle ran a new personal best of 1:54.43 in the 800-meter run for a fourth place finish. Tyler O’Neill (1:59.83) also earned a new PR in the event.

Three Jackrabbits finished in the top 10 of the 1500-meter with Brandon Kampsen (3:48.27) in the lead in fourth place. Daniel Burkhalter was next in ninth place with a time of 3:49.27 and Will Lohr ran a new personal best of 3:50.08 for 10th. Luke Johnson (3:55.62) and Cashton Johnson (4:02.98) also clocked new PRs.

Josh Becker run an 8:56.74 for third place in the 3000-meter steeplechase as Cody Larson finished ninth in 9:19.43.

Carson Noecker took fourth in the 5000-meter run at Minnesota and is now fifth on the SDSU All-Time List with his time of 14:00.42.

Ethan Fischer won the discus throw with his mark of 176-00.00 while Caiden Fredrick threw a 167-07.00 to take fourth.

Fredrick also took 14th in the shot put with his mark of 50-08.00 while in the javelin throw, Benson finished ninth with a 150-11.00.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Sam Castle, Kudra Nzibariza, Jeremiah Donahoe and Andrew Moeller clocked a 3:19.20 for a third place finish.

Mount Marty Twilight

Several jumpers head south to Yankton for competition on Wednesday, competing in several events throughout the day.

On the women’s side, Katelyn Darnell ran a 15.52 in the 100-meter hurdles for fifth place as Robyn Dayton finished 16th overall with a PR of 17.57.

Madison Kizer cleared the third-best mark in school history—5-09.25—to take second place in the high jump as Taylor Jochum (5-05.75) was fourth and Layne Kirkendoll (5-05.75) was fifth.
Kirkendoll also leapt into fifth place of the long jump with a mark of 17-08.00.

Camryn Brinkman led the way in the triple jumping, claiming third with a 36-06.75 as Emma Smith took ninth with a 35-01.00 and Apryl Adderley finished 11th with a 34-00.25.

Laci Leverty took fourth in the pole vault as she tied her personal best of 12-11.00, which now places her second on the SDSU All-Time List.

On the men’s side, Hudson Schroeder went on a hot streak down in Yankton, winning the long jump with a personal best leap of 22-07.25 as Isaac Flanegan claimed fifth with a PR of 21-06.00. Schroeder then claimed runner-up in the 100-meter dash in 10.68 seconds and was third in the 200-meter dash with a 21.82.

SDSU finished back-to-back in the high jump as Connor Powers cleared 6-06.75 for fifth and Carson Kirwan was sixth with a 6-06.75.

Tristen Hanna won the triple jump with a distance of 45-01.50 and finished second in the javelin throw with a mark of 159-11.00.

Finally, Ryan Karajanis flew into second place of the pole vault with a height of 14-11.00.
