Larry Zwieg

Posted

Larry Ross Zwieg was born on Dec. 11, 1937, in Watertown, SD, to Carl and Anna (Jahn) Zwieg. Larry attended country school in Thomas, SD.
In 1959, he sustained a devastating accident when an air compressor exploded near him. Part of the tank struck him in the legs, breaking both, and causing him serious injury. Larry spent nearly a year in the hospital recovering.
There was one silver lining in his time spent in the hospital, and that was meeting his future wife, Diana Hauff, who worked as a nurse at the hospital during his recovery. Larry must have made quite an impression on Diana, as the two later married on March 3, 1967. Larry and Diana later adopted two daughters, Gretchen and Colleen.
As Larry would say, he got a “kick” out of watching the girls play sports throughout their youth, and sitting in the cold bleachers for numerous marching band competitions while playing in The Pride Drumline at SDSU. Larry and Diana had season tickets to SDSU football solely to watch Colleen perform.
Larry worked for the Watertown Highway Department for a short period of time in his early years. He spent the majority of his work life at Banner Associates as a certified land surveyor. Larry especially enjoyed his “mobile office” and being and to spend so much time outdoors.
Larry was a true storyteller and enjoyed time spent telling his stories to family whenever he had the chance. He was interested in anything to do with airplanes, and especially enjoyed spending time outside when he was able to.
Larry passed away on March 29, 2024, at the Brookings hospital.
Larry is preceded in death by his wife, Diana; his parents; two sisters; six brothers; and several wonderful friends that he made throughout the years.
He is survived by his daughters: Gretchen Holden, of Fargo, ND, and Colleen Poindexter, of Brookings, SD; five grandchildren: Abby Paul, Ethan Paul, Caleb Paul, Joshua Holden, and Anna Holden; and several nieces and nephews.
